ARCATA - Humboldt kept the winning streaking rolling at Lumberjack Arena and entered the four-game home stand with a victory over Cal State East Bay, 61-50. The Jacks extended their winning streak to four in front of a home crowd on Thursday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game and improved to 10-7 (7-6, CCAA).
Strong leadership edged the Jacks past the visiting squad and Humboldt's captains Taylor Kilgore, Bree Halsey and Lisa Petty stepped up to the challenge that the Pioneers presented.
“It was great senior leadership by Taylor (Kilgore) and our captains that put the team on their backs,” said HSU head coach Joddie Gleason. “It is nice to be at home and get the win,” she added.
The Jacks led CSU East Bay by 11 points at half but allowed the Pioneers to chip away and tie-up the game twice with less than 10 minutes to play.
“They (CSUEB) tied it up twice but we never panicked,” said coach Gleason. “We hit key baskets and had key rebounds and stops that allowed us to win,” she added.
The Jacks, who were led by Petty (17), Kilgore (14) and Jeanette DeWitt (10), outshot the Pioneers by more than double in three-point percentage. Kilgore and Petty, combined, were 8-12 from the arc.
Cassie Coble was the leading scorer for CSUEB but was only allowed eight points from the determined Lumberjack defense.
Humboldt will take on UC San Diego on Saturday night at Lumberjack Arena. The Jacks defeated UCSD in San Diego earlier in the season, 92-88 in double overtime.
