Jacks start regular season with big win

Box Score SAN RAFAEL – The Jacks began their run early in the first match-up of the California Collegiate Athletic Association/Pacific West Challenge against host institution Dominican University and never let go.  Humboldt State defeated the Penguins, 76-51, dominating the court with seasoned veterans.

BOX SCORE

With the win, the Jacks start their season 1-0, while the Penguins begin 0-1.

"I am pleased with how we played," said head coach Joddie Gleason.  "We picked up the intensity about half-way through the first half and were able to force some turnovers."

Humboldt State's early 7-0 run left the Penguins scoreless for nearly the first three minutes of play.  The Lumberjacks entered the locker room at the half with the biggest lead of the half, 17-points, to put the score at 43-26.

The Lumberjack defense held just two players to double-figure scoring—Lauren Hyatt led with 16 points and Kayla Valentine had 14—while HSU was able to produce five.  Kayla Williams led the Jacks with 15 points, Caitie Richards added 13, Patrice Saindon added 11, and Lexxi Price and Whitney Howard each contributed 10.

"Kayla (Williams) is playing with a lot of confidence," said Gleason.  "She is able to do a lot for us on both ends of the court."

Humboldt State plays the second half of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 3:00 p.m against Academy of Art. The Jacks are no strangers to the Urban Knights, beating them in overtime last year 76-73.

"We got to watch them (Academy of Art) a little bit today and they are very good," said Gleason.  "They are very talented and have a good post player that could give us trouble. We need to keep her from getting the easy ones."
