Last pre-conference tune-up next for Jacks

ARCATA – After grabbing two victories on the road at the California Collegiate Athletic Association/Pacific West Challenge hosted by Dominican, Humboldt State returns home to host Hope International. The Jacks defeated Dominican 76-51 on Friday and followed with another victory on Saturday, taking down Academy of Art 68-54.

Friday's 7 p.m. game is the last tune-up for the Jacks before they start conference play next Saturday. Humboldt State currently stands at 2-0 on the season and looks to continue its winning ways heading into California Collegiate Athletic Association action.

Head-to-Head
The Jacks have never faced the Royals before, something head coach Joddie Gleason is kind of excited about. "There's good and bad to the first time playing against someone," said Gleason. "It's always exciting to go into the unknown." After talking with coaches that have faced Hope this year, Gleason knows the Royals usually play in attack mode—something her team is familiar with since the Jacks like to press in a similar way. "Looks to be an exciting game since both teams like to attack," said Gleason.

Lumberjack Notes
Kayla Williams has continued to step into her leadership role for the Jacks. "Kayla has shown tremendous leadership and poise in games and practices so far," said Gleason. "She's done a good job being vocal to get people on the same page. It's what we need her and the other upperclassmen to do." Williams leads HSU in assists with eight and accumulated 21 points over the weekend at the CCAA/PacWest Challenge. ... Caitie Richards leads the Jacks in points with 30, followed closely by Whitney Howard with 29—19 of which came in the win over Academy of Arts. Bree Halsey tops the rebounding list with 18 total rebounds.

Opponent Notes
Hope International started its season with a 1-2 record, beating Simpson 100-89 in the season opener. The Royals are led by freshman Brittany Bauman, who averages 14.3 points per game. Samera Dorton is Hope's top rebounder with 23 rebounds, 16 of which are defensive.

Injury Report
Injuries have plagued the squad this year, leaving Gleason and her coaching staff with struggles of finding a consistent rotation. While the Jacks now have Lisa Petty back, Rachael Zarate is now on the injured list due to a knee injury sustained over the weekend. Kelly Kime is questionable for Friday's game, but is expected to be back for the start of conference next week. "Our injuries are the biggest concern," said Gleason. "We just need to get people healthy and keep them healthy."

Gleason Gabs
"Right now were're building day-to-day, week-to-week. We're getting better at each position and learning the system better. Our continuity is improving as well." ... "We're still at the point where we're more concerned with ourselves than our opponents, but once we get to conference games, we'll be able to focus on our opponents."
