ARCATA — Fighting off foul trouble and a comeback surge by the San Francisco State Gators, Humboldt State kept its California Collegiate Athletic Association lead intact with a 78-65 win over SFSU on Friday.
Boxscore
Combined with UC San Diego's 61-59 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Jacks' 17-2 CCAA record gives them a two-game lead with three games remaining. HSU improved to 21-2 overall heading into Saturday's game against Cal State Monterey Bay.
Senior post Brian Morris got it done again for the Jacks, starting them off by scoring 12 early points before sitting down because of foul trouble, then finished off the Gators with a second half scoring explosion. The Jacks' big man ended his night with 37 points, hitting 15 of 20 shots from the field and adding five more from the free throw line.
Making Morris's accomplishment even more impressive was the fact that he was limited to 22 minutes of court time due to foul trouble. He sat out all but six minutes of the first half before exiting with two fouls, but returned with a fury in the second period.
Hitting fade-aways, 3-pointers and taking the ball strong to the rim, Morris achieved his second highest scoring effort of the season. He also topped the Jacks in rebounding, pulling down 10 boards for another double-double.
Also coming up big for the Jacks were Brandon Sperling, with 14 points, and Kyle Baxter, with 13. Baxter drained back-to-back 3-pointers after the Gators had trimmed the Jacks' lead to 1 point with just under 13 minutes remaining to play.
Marquel Hoskins led the Gators' charge back into contention after the Jacks had built a 17-point lead. Hoskins led SFSU with 21 points and backcourt mate Nefi Perdomo scored 18 points for the Gators.
Morris' layup and jumper gave the Jacks an 11-point lead with 10:12 left to play. The Gators were unable to get the lead down to single digits the remainder of the game, as HSU expanded the lead to 19 points before both teams emptied the bench.
San Francisco State was forced to play without its third-leading scorer, Eureka native Tim Pratt, who was injured in last week's game against Cal State Los Angeles. The Gators, coming in as the CCAA's third place team and ranked No. 9 in the West Region, fell to 14-9 overall and 12-7 in league play.
