Jacks end regular season play at Lumberjack Arena

ARCATA-   The Humboldt State women's basketball team will wrap-up their regular season play in front of a home crowd this week at Lumberjack Arena.  The Jacks will pay tribute to Taylor Kilgore who is the lone senior on the 2010-11 team.  Humboldt, who has already clinched a berth to the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament, will match-up against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday and Cal State LA on Friday.  The game nights have changed due to the conference tournament the following week.

Head-to-Head

Humboldt defeated CSUDH (75-60) and snuck by CSULA (71-70) earlier in the season.  HSU leads CSU Dominguez Hills (8-7) in the all-time series and also holds an (8-5) advantage over Cal State Los Angeles.

Lumberjack Notes

The Lumberjacks are coming off an emotional weekend on the road against San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay.  The Jacks beat the Gators (66-65) at the buzzer with a Bree Halsey put-back off of a missed attempt by Jenna Hamilton.  “It was a great win for us at San Francisco,” said HSU head coach Joddie Gleason.  “We made some fundamental mistakes down the stretch that could have cost us but the girls pulled it out,” she added.  With the exciting high, unfortunately came a disappointing low.  Humboldt dropped their biggest scoring loss of the season to CSU Monterey Bay, 75-54.  The Jacks, who led at the half, just could not put two halves together to beat one of the top CCAA teams.  “They (CSUMB) started hitting shots and we didn't,” said Gleason.  “They are consistent and fundamentally a solid, defensive team,” she added.  The Otters held all HSU players to single digits in scoring.  With the regular season coming to an end, Gleason and her Jacks know that the post season will be a challenge but not out of reach.  “I feel the season has gone by quickly but the team is working hard and progressing well,” commented Gleason. “We don't know whom we are playing yet in the first game but as a team we will prepare and be ready,” she concluded.

Opponent's Notes

CSUDH and CSULA are both fighting for the eighth spot in the CCAA tournament and both are one game back from Sonoma State and SF State for the final spot with two games to play.  The Toros hold a 4-20 (4-16, CCAA) record entering Wedneday's game.  The Toros are coming off a split week with a loss against UC San Diego  (57-71) and a win over Cal State East Bay (56-55).  CSUDH is led in scoring by Nikki Boutte who is averaging 9.7 points per game…Cal State LA enters this week with a 7-17(4-16, CCAA) record before they face Sonoma State on Friday night.  The Eagle are led by Lacy Ramon, 14.6 points per game and Gretchen Tiernan, 10.2.

Coach Joddie Gleason

Joddie Gleason enters her seventh season at the helm of the Humboldt State's women's basketball program, after leading the 2009-10 squad to a 20-11 overall record and 14-8 mark in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.  Finishing in a tie for fourth place in the conference, the Jacks went on a three-game tear and won the CCAA Tournament and earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  It was the team's third NCAA Division II West Regional birth in the last five years and just the fourth in school history.  Under Gleason, the Lumberjacks have won more games in the past five years than in any other six-year period and her .602 winning percentage is by far the best in school history. In her six years at HSU, Gleason has amassed a 118-78 overall mark and is 84-55 in league contests (63-40 in the CCAA and 21-15 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference).

Gleason's Comments

“Taylor (Kilgore) has been a recognizable figure in the community in her five years in the program…she has become a focal point and everybody tends to know who she is.”…”As a senior, she has really stepped up for our young team and has been a leader by example and by being vocal.”…”It can be a challenge to be the lone senior and at times can be a burden but she is a competitive player who is a positive influence for our young players.”…”She will be missed.”
