Humboldt closes out regular season with a win

ARCATA - In true Humboldt fashion, the women's basketball season ended their regular season at Lumberjack Arena with a victory over Cal State LA.  The battle lasted for 40 minutes but the Jacks would not allow anything but a win for senior, Taylor Kilgore, who played her last home game for the Jacks.

“I am extremely proud of them,” said HSU head coach Joddie Gleason in regards to her team's win. “We had a lot of composure down the stretch where we had huge rebounds and did a good job of taking care of the ball,” she added.

The Jacks, who were led by Lisa Petty with 18 points, took a 10-4 lead in the early minutes of play before quickly falling to the Golden Eagles who continued to chip away at the host, Jacks.  Humboldt ended the half with a five-point advantage.

“I feel like we weren't as sharp offensively tonight,” said Gleason.  “We need to get that cleaned up and make the right read,” she added.

Although the Jacks totaled for 20 turnovers, Humboldt was able to see spark off the bench and consistent shooting from Caitie Richards who has been injured for the better half of the season.

“Caitie provided a huge spark for us off the bench,” commented Gleason.  “It is nice to have her back and be able to put her in when we were struggling,” she added.

The Jacks and Golden Eagles teeter-tottered back and forth scoring in the second half with both teams controlling the lead.  Humboldt closed out the game by sinking nine of their last 10 free throws.

“We have had so many close games so we regrouped down the stretch and hit those free throws,” said Gleason.  “That's how you win these games,” she added.

With the win, the Jacks moved up to the number five seed in the CCAA rankings.  Final pairings have not been released but it appears as though the Jacks will travel to play San Bernardino in the first round of the conference tournament on Tuesday.

“They (CSUSB) got us when we were down there,” said Gleason.  “We will be excited to go down and get this one from them,” she concluded.
