Gators steal one from HSU women's basketball

Box Score ARCATA - Offense was much improved for the Lumberjacks, but two key steals in the games final minutes helped San Francisco State come from behind for a 59-52 win in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action Thursday night.

Humboldt State (7-8 overall, 3-6 CCAA) had three players in double figures and was ahead 50-47 with 5:20 left in the game, but key steals by Jennifer Le and Nicole Hicks led to easy San Francisco State baskets and deflated the Jacks. The Gators improve to 8-5 overall and 5-4 in the CCAA. It was the fifth loss in a row for Humboldt.

"San Francisco's best offense is creating turnovers," said HSU Head Coach Joddie Gleason. "Our veterans did not make plays at the end and theirs did. We expect more from our veterans."

Lisa Petty (13 points), Elle Anderson (12 points and 10 rebounds), and Kelly Kime (11 points and 14 rebounds) led the Jacks. Kime's 14 rebounds were a career high. The Gators were led by Nicole Hicks with 21 points, and Farrah Shokoor with 12 rebounds.

"We need three starters in double figures to be successful. Kelly and Elle did a nice job," Gleason said. "We moved Kelly to the guard position tonight and she had more open looks from the perimeter."

Humboldt trailed 25-22 at halftime, and Kime hit a pair of 3-pointers early in the second half to put the Jacks up 28-25. But the scrappy Gator defense did not allow HSU to pull away. Humboldt's biggest lead of the half was four points.

After a Le steal, Angela Van Sickel hit a 3-ponter for the Gators to tie the game at 50 with 4:22 left in the game. Elle Anderson put the Jacks up ahead with a lay-up (52-50) at the 3:04 mark, but the Gators quickly tied it again on a jumper by Van Sickel with 2:49 left to play.

In the final two minutes the Jacks missed all six of their shots, including three lay ups. Despite the lack of production in the final moments, the second half was Humboldt's best shooting half in weeks, as the team hit 44.4% of its shots and was four of nine from 3-point range.
