Box Score ARCATA – Both teams were bruised and bloodied as the defense never rested in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) women's basketball game Thursday night. Cal State Monterey Bay was the last team standing, defeating Humboldt State 51-43.
The Lumbjerjacks (5-12 CCAA, 9-14) held Monterey Bay (13-4 CCAA, 16-4) to 25% shooting in the game, including a paltry 12.5% in the first half (5 of 40). The game was tied 17-17 at halftime. The Otters shot 25% for the game. Humboldt shot 28%.
“We did great defensively against a really good team,” said HSU Head Coach
Joddie Gleason. “We held their shooting percentage down, rebounded pretty well with them, and we had a four point lead in the second half.”
Humboldt led 34-30 with 9:47 left in the game, but three consecutive turnovers helped to fuel a 10-0 streak by the Otters over the next three minutes, and they led 40-34.
Kelly Kime broke the Otter streak with a 3-pointer at the 7:30 mark to make it 40-37. Kime's mouth was bloodied later when she took an elbow to the jaw.
“Kime hit that three and brought it back to a one-possession game,” Gleason said. “But we couldn't overcome their aggressive defense.”
“Monterey is up there,” Kime said. “We were tied with them at halftime, and I thought our defense was great. Monterey is one of the better defenses, so for us to be patient on offense and score really helped us. I think it will build our confidence for when we play East Bay on Saturday.”
Humboldt was led by
Lisa Petty with 17 points. Kime was the leading reabounder for HSU with nine. Jessica Fontenette was the leading scorer for the Otters with 12. Brittani Jefferson led all players with 11 rebounds.
Humboldt will play Cal State East Bay on Saturday in Lumberjack Arena. Tip off is 5:30. East Bay (10-7 CCAA, 12-9) defeated Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, 52-50.
