Lumberjack Sharpshooters Sink the Raiders 82-66

ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State men's basketball shot 56 percent from beyond the arc as it sank the visiting Southern Oregon Raiders in Tuesday evening's exhibition game at Lumberjack Arena.

"We are excited about the win," said Head Coach Steve Kinder. "They are a well coached, veteran team and is picked to be near the top in its conference."

The Jacks stormed out to a 9-1 advantage in the first five minutes and never took their foot off the gas.

Senior Austin Bryan and junior Rakim Brown led the HSU offense in the opening period with nine and seven points, respectively, but it was newcomer Andrew Cones that made a big splash. Cones nailed a pair of first half treys that led the Jacks to intermission with a 36-32 advantage.

The Raiders pulled to within two points in the first three minutes of the second half, but the Jacks' defense kept them from stealing the momentum.

With just under nine minutes left in the game, Bryan connected on a three-point bucket and followed it up with a steal. He passed to Calvin Young, who threw down a two-handed dunk that gave the Jacks a 63-49 lead and put the game out of reach.

Senior Thomas Witzel and Bryan led the Green and Gold with 17 points apiece. Witzel was 5-for-11 shooting and 3-for-4 from outside the arc. Cones finished the game with 12 points, was 3-for-5 from long range and dished out six assists.

The Jacks shot 48 percent from the field in the win and hit 10-of-16 shots from the free throw line. HSU's defense shocked Southern Oregon as it came away with five steals and caused 17 turnovers.

HSU travels cross country for an exhibition matchup versus Division I St. Johns in New York City on Saturday, Nov. 1. Tipoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. PT and fans can watch the game live on ESPN 3.
