Fast and Furious Lumberjacks Breeze Past Simpson 110-77

ARCATA, Calif. -- Humboldt State men's basketball sank 17 3-pointers and made quick work of Simpson, 110-77, in Friday evening's regular season opener at Lumberjack Arena.

"I am very pleased with the result," said Head Coach Steve Kinder. "We played Lumberjack basketball tonight. We pressed and were relentless in our defensive pressure and I am not surprised it resulted in the win tonight."

The Jacks (1-0) offense sputtered through the first seven minutes as they led 19-16. HSU roared into overdrive and took off on an 11-2 run and captured a 30-18 lead with 8:41 left in the half.

Senior Allan Guei, who is moving to the wing this season, showed off his dynamic scoring talents throughout the game. The Compton, Calif., native went 4-for-6 from the field and led the Jacks with nine points in the opening period. He was a perfect 5-for-5 in the second half and finished with a team-leading 22 points.

"Allan easily had his best offensive performance as a Lumberjack tonight," said Kinder.

Guei attributes tonight's shooting success to the team's hard work in practice.

"This week and last week at practice we have been working on our shooting and tonight it paid off," said Guei.

HSU shot 53.3 percent in the first half and its defense swarmed to cause 15 turnovers.

The Red Hawks (3-4) scored the first basket as they came out of the break, but were unable to recover from their deficit.

Guei knocked down a 3-pointer with 7:36 left in the game to give the Jacks a game-high 36-point advantage.

The Green and Gold offense moved the ball efficiently throughout the game, which provided wide-open looks for Jacks' sharpshooters. Senior Austin Bryan connected on a team-best four 3-pointers, three of which came after halftime. Bryan's 13 second-half points matched Guei's output and he scored 20 total points in the win.

Freshman Malik Morgan flashed his outstanding ball handling and passing skills versus the Red Hawks. He dished out a team-high nine assists and scored 12 points.

"Malik was fantastic tonight," said Kinder. "I think he is going to be a premier guard. He has great court sense and is a quarterback that likes to distribute to his receivers. He is very mature as a freshman point guard."

Jonnie Washburn was the leading scorer for the Red Hawks and ended the game with 14 points. Shaquille Jones and Ian Corrella rounded out Simpson's top scorers with 12 and 11 points apiece, respectively.

Jacks Ethan Dillard (13) and Rakim Brown (10) rounded out the five HSU players with double-digit points Friday. Dillard tied Bryan with four made 3-point buckets.

The Jacks host Bristol Wednesday at Lumberjack Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
