Jacks storm back but fall in OT

Allan Guei (25)
Box Score ARCATA – After storming back from a second half double-digit deficit, Humboldt State was unable to close out regulation for the win, before falling in overtime to Cal State Los Angeles, 84-78.

Trailing by as many as 12 points in the second half and 10 points halfway through the second half, the Lumberjacks' Allan Guei missed floater in the final seconds of regulation took the game to extra time.

The Golden Eagles' Duce Zaid hit the opening overtime shot, a 3-pointer, and CSULA never trailed for the victory.

"The press made a difference in the game. With our full court Lumberjack press, we were able to get the game we wanted," said HSU head coach Steve Kinder. "We are baffled by how many free throws Cal State Los Angeles shot tonight. I don't know the last time seeing 49 free throws by a team in a boxscore."

David Howard, who fouled out with two minutes left in the second half, led HSU with 25 points on eight of 13 shooting.

"David Howard had another great individual performance and at times defended with blocked shots," Kinder said.

Despite having a tough night shooting wise (4 of 21), Guei added 16 points and six assists.

"Allan, although his shooting percentage was not up to par, was forced at times to take shots as our offensive execution was dismal," noted Kinder.

Senior Derrick Buchanan came off the bench for some valuable minutes and production. He contributed eight points including the go ahead tip-in with 1:35 left in the game to go with four rebounds and two steals.

After playing to an even first half at 35 apiece, the Golden Eagles (14-9/11-8 California Collegiate Athletic Association) ran off an 11-1 opening four minutes of the second half to make it 46-36.

In the middle of the second half, the Jacks (10-15/5-14 CCAA) went on an 18-6 run to take the lead, 64-62.

After Howard fouled out with 2:02 in the game, the Buchanan tip-in was the home team's final points as CSULA's Zaid laid in an offensive rebound with 31 seconds to tie the game at 66.

HSU will wrap up its home slate with Senior Night on Saturday when it hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7:30 p.m.
