Football Silences Red Storm 50-3

ST. GEORGE, Utah -- Despite an hour-long weather delay, the Humboldt State football team erupted for 36 first half points in Saturday's 50-3 road win over Dixie State University.

The Lumberjacks (3-0) silenced the Red Storm crowd on its home opener and gave the Green and Gold its largest margin of victory since it defeated Simon Fraser 66-20 to cap the 2010 season.

"Tonight was another great team win," said Head Coach Rob Smith. "It starts with our defense. They are playing tremendous football right now. It's 11 guys doing their jobs, getting after it and forcing the issue. They are also getting takeaways, which is great to see. The offense continues to run the football effectively, and the kicking game is doing its part as well."

HSU's attacking defense struck early and often Saturday and the offense cashed in on Dixie State miscues. The Jacks' first touchdown of the game came after a Ryan Moreno interception and the second score after a Codey Heidebrecht forced fumble and Silas Sarvinski long fumble return.

"What I love about our defense right now, is that they are not giving up easy yards," said Smith. "Whatever the opponent gets from us they are going to have to earn. We emphasize running to the football and making plays on the ball."

The Red Storm (0-3) offense struggled throughout the game. Dixie State alternated quarterbacks and its running game never came into play because of the team's deficit. HSU's Travis Hansen snatched an interception and took it back for a touchdown to break the Red Storm's momentum following a Robert Webber turnover late in the second quarter. Hansen's touchdown gave the Jacks a 29-3 lead.

Webber had another successful evening under center for the Green and Gold. He connected on several long passes and threw two touchdown strikes. The Corona, Calif., native rifled a long pass to Cass White to give HSU a 37-3 advantage before halftime. Webber also opened the game's scoring with a shovel pass to receiver Chase Krivashei.

The dynamic rushing duo of Nick Ricciardulli and Ja'Quan Gardner went back to work against the Red Storm. Ricciardulli scored a first quarter touchdown and Gardner added a pair of rushing scores. Gardner opened the second half with a two-yard touchdown carry, which extended the Jacks' lead to 43-3. Freshman Richard Doctor also found his way into the end zone against Dixie State. Doctor put HSU's final points on the board as he ran for a short touchdown late in the third quarter.

"We've had three weeks in a row where we were able to run the football effectively. Our offense starts with the ability to do just that," said Smith. "We're blessed with some very talented running backs. Our offensive line continues to produce and has allowed our running game to do what we've done thus far."

HSU returns home to face Western Oregon University on Saturday, Sept. 27. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT.

"Western Oregon has had our number," said Smith. "Even in 2011 when we won the championship, our one loss was to Western Oregon. They are well coached and play with great intensity and great emotion. It's going to be a very big game. We hope the Redwood Bowl is packed again."
