ARCATA, Calif. – For the fourth time since the 2010-11 season, Humboldt State hosts Southern Oregon Tuesday in Lumberjack Arena. The season-opening game will tip off at 7 p.m.
"Southern Oregon will be a formidable challenge for our team on opening night," said Head Coach
Steve Kinder. "They have already played five games, so they will be significantly more seasoned at this early juncture of the season."
The Raiders have won two consecutive regular season games and are coming off a 96-84 win over Willamette. Ben DeSaulnier is the Raiders leading scorer and averages 20.8 points per game. The sophomore guard scored 28 points and showed off his sharpshooting skills going 4-of-6 from 3-point range in SOU's last game.
"They have proven they can win games with five solid scoring options on their roster and by shooting from beyond the 3-point line effectively," said Kinder. "They are a well-coached and disciplined team, and they communicate well both offensively and defensively. They are unique defensively because of their ability to change defenses on the run."
HSU played just one exhibition game and defeated visiting Bristol 93-76 on Nov. 4.
Malik Morgan, the reigning California Collegiate Athletic Association Freshman of the Year, led all Green and Gold scorers with 19 points. The Jacks offense was sluggish to start and shot 33.3 percent from the field before catching fire in the second half and shooting 61.3 percent.
