Women’s Basketball Wins by 21 in Consecutive Exhibitions

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's basketball program treated the home fans to a 21-point victory for the second time in as many weeks. The Lumberjacks defeated Bristol University, 71-50, on Monday night in the second of three exhibition matches.

"Our goal was to improve from last week to this week, and it felt like we did," said Head Coach Joddie Gleason. "Our main focus this week in practice was communication and focus on the defensive end and I felt we did that. It was a much improved defensive effort."

The Jacks were led in scoring from players on both ends of the academic spectrum. Sumayyah Wiggins scored 13 points on a perfect night from the field. The senior was 6-6 from the floor, including 1-1 from behind the arc, and completed the double-double with 10 boards. Freshman Sophie Northern was the other double-figure scorer for the Green and Gold. In her first collegiate action, the Fortuna, Calif., product totaled 10 points on 4-7 shooting.

"I think we are really deep, and I felt like everybody came in and contributed," said Gleasson.

Bristol's Kejuana Gardner led all scorers with 17 points. The Bears had three double-digit scorers from a roster that only dressed seven players.

The Jacks will have one final tune-up before entering regular-season competition. Humbuildt will travel to Division I UC Davis on Saturday.

"UC Davis is a very solid team on both ends of the court," said Gleason. "The difference is their high level of offense, which gives us another opportunity to grow on the defensive end. Plus, they are much bigger than us at every position. That's always a great opportunity for us to play against bigger players, and to focus on keeping them off the boards."

The regular season will begin at Lumberjack Arena on Nov. 13 and 14 with the highly anticipated West Region Challenge.
