Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Overcomes Halftime Deficit to Defeat Sonoma State

ARCATA, Calif. – Down by as much as nine in the third quarter, Humboldt State women's basketball came back to win its second conference game of the season. The Lumberjacks (4-5, 2-1) knocked off conference foe Sonoma State (4-6, 0-3) on Friday night, 65-57.

"In both halves, we worked hard and were flying around," said Head Coach Joddie Gleason. "In the third quarter, we really came out and created offense from our defense. We got more tips, more steals, and were able to get a few layups. That just eases our offense and doesn't make things so hard."

Fouls were the story early on Friday. Each team was forced to quickly go to their benches in the first quarter after a combined seven fouls were whistled within the game's opening three minutes. Humboldt State tied its season high with 32 free throw attempts on the night, netting 22 of them.

After scoring just 23 points in the first half, the Jacks went into the locker room down 29-23.

Sonoma State scored five of the first seven points in the second half to grow its lead to nine points, its largest of the night. Humboldt clawed back though, and tied the game for the sixth time of the night at 41-41 with 1:14 remaining in the third. HSU's 11-2 run in the final 3:54 to end the quarter was enough to push the home side ahead by two heading into the final period of play.

Once the comeback gave the lead back to the Jacks, HSU's run was not over. After pushing to regain the lead in the third quarter, Humboldt State opened the final period on a 19-7 run to grow the lead to a game-high 14 points with 2:49 to play. The Lumberjacks were able to close it out and win their second California Collegiate Athletic Association game of the year, 65-57.

A trio of Lumberjacks led the way with 12 points. Kiana Brown, A'Jaee Foster, and a career-high from Jessica Johnson fueled the Green and Gold, with fellow starter Teylor McMiller adding in 11. HSU held Sonoma's starters to just 18 points.

Humboldt also recorded a season-high five blocks, with McMiller accounting for a season-high three of her own.

"Our goal is to keep opponents under 35-percent shooting and we were able to do that," said Gleason. "We have a bunch of different goals as a team, and typically when we meet those goals we win."

The Jacks will be back at it Saturday night to play the final conference game of the calendar year. San Francisco State (3-4, 1-1) comes to Lumberjack Arena with tip off set for 5:30 p.m. This will be the lone CCAA game for the Gators this week.
