GLENDORA, Calif. – No. 19 Azusa Pacific unleashed a balanced offensive attack that was too much for Humboldt State football in Saturday's 45-13 road loss.
Saturday's result was the Lumberjacks' first road loss of the season, and it moves HSU to 3-4 overall and 1-4 against Great Northwest Athletic Conference opponents. Azusa Pacific improved its record 6-1 overall and 5-0 in conference.
A Kurt Scoby rushing touchdown gave the Cougars a 7-0 advantage with 11:18 remaining in the first quarter.
HSU answered the Azusa Pacific score with a four-play, 65-yard touchdown drive. On 3rd-and-9 from midfield, quarterback
Robert Webber connected with receiver
Richard Doctor on a 50-yard touchdown pass. Azusa Pacific's Bryan Weitzman blocked the extra point and kept the Green and Gold from evening the score.
Things continued to look up for the Jacks when
Julian Owens forced a fumble on the Cougars next drive, but HSU was unable to cash in on the Azusa Pacific miscue. Running back
Ja'Quan Gardner fumbled on the fifth play of the drive, and Aaron Berry took care of the 62-yard scoop and score play for the Cougars.
A field goal and Scoby touchdown gave Azusa Pacific a 24-6 lead at halftime.
The Cougars added three more touchdowns in the game. A 40-yard touchdown scamper from Aaron Baltazar late in the third quarter highlighted Azusa Pacific's second-half scoring effort.
Isaiah Hall raced into the end zone with 3:07 left to play to cement the 45-13 final score. Hall's touchdown was the first of his Lumberjack career.
Azusa Pacific amassed 559 yards of total offense, including 345 passing yards courtesy of the Cougars two-quarterback system. Andrew Elffers led the passing attack with 303 yards and a touchdown on 18-of-25 passing.
HSU struggled to convert third down opportunities in the loss. The Jacks were 3-of-17 converting third down chances.
Gardner was the Jacks leading rusher, and he compiled 113 yards on 26 carries. The junior finished the first half with 74 yards of his rushing total. Gardner added 47 receiving yards on seven catches.
A 100-yard receiving performance made Doctor the Jacks' top receiver versus the Cougars. He had seven catches for 100 yards and a touchdown.
Julian Owens and
Jeff Shott registered double-digit tackles with 11 and 10, respectively. Owens also forced a fumble and notched his second interception of the season.
HSU travels to Monmouth, Ore., for a nationally-televised showdown with Western Oregon on Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
