Shooting Woes Keep Men’s Basketball Out of Win Column

SAN FRANCISCO – It was a one-possession game with six and a half minutes remaining in the first half when San Francisco State's sharpshooting took its toll on Humboldt State. The Gators (12-8, 6-8) built up a lead as high as 32 points, and defeated the Lumberjacks (14-6, 8-6), 85-59, on Saturday night.

Tyras Rattler put the Green and Gold ahead 10-7 early, with his made three at the 14:51 mark of the first half. The three-point edge proved to be HSU's largest all game.

After the Gators tied it up at 11-11, Justin Everett converted a layup to put the Jacks back up a pair with 11:45 remaining in the opening half.

Rakim Brown hit a layup of his own to bring Humboldt within a basket, 22-20, with 6:39 remaining in the half. That is when San Francisco State built up its lead. The Gators closed the half on a 20-7 run to go into the locker room leading, 42-27.

The home team controlled the second half, as San Francisco continued to build on the lead behind its 47.5 percent shooting in the game.

Everett and Malik Morgan finished with 10 points apiece to lead the Jacks. Will Taylor collected team-high's with eight rebounds and five assists.

Humboldt's 59 points are a season-low for the CCAA scoring leaders, as well as its 33.9 percent (20-for-59) shooting from the field and 15.4 percent (4-for-26) shooting from long range.

The Jacks fortunately have a quick turnaround and return to action Saturday night at Sonoma State. The game with the Seawolves is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., following the women's contest.
