Gardner Leads HSU Football Past Western Oregon

ARCATA, Calif. – For the second consecutive game, senior running back Ja'Quan Gardner ran for at least three touchdowns and carried the load for the Humboldt State football team. The Lumberjacks defeated Western Oregon 42-32 Saturday night in Redwood Bowl.

HSU improved to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

A 53-yard touchdown pass from Robert Webber to Marjani Ellison and a 17-yard run into the end zone from Gardner put HSU up 14-0 midway through the first quarter.

The Wolves rallied scoring 17 straight points and took the lead on a 90-yard punt return for a touchdown by dynamic receiver and return man Paul Revis.

The crowd was silenced following Revis' touchdown return, but the Jacks manufactured an 11-play, 71-yard scoring drive to excite the Green and Gold fans. Key plays in the drive were a 17-yard reception by Gardner and a 17-yard scamper by running back Jabar Byrd. Gardner scored his third and final touchdown from three yards out to put the Jacks back on top 21-17 with 3:32 left in the half.

HSU struck again following a botched punt attempt by the Wolves that set the home team up in enemy territory. The Western Oregon punter fumbled the snap and was brought down at the visitor's 6 yard line. Gardner needed just two carries to get the six yards needed to give the Green and Gold an 11-point lead at intermission.

Thaddeus Philyaw intercepted a Phillip Fenumiai pass in the end zone to continue the Wolves' offensive woes. Webber guided the Jacks on a 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive following the interception. He connected with Jamere Austin on a 25-yard touchdown pass for the only points in the third quarter.

Western Oregon outscored HSU 15-7 in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late as the home team held on for the win. Chase Krivashei caught his sixth touchdown of the season with 9:47 left in the game.

Gardner finished with a season-high 35 carries to go with his three rushing scores. The Ceres, Calif., native compiled 215 rushing yards and caught a pair of passes for 30 yards.

Curtis Williams was one of the Jacks' top contributors on the defensive end. Williams led the way with 10 tackles, including one for a loss. Jonathan Charles and Willie Mitchell each contributed a sack for the HSU defense.

The Jacks travel to Burnaby, British Columbia for their second meeting with the Simon Fraser Clan on Saturday, Oct. 28. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
