Football Wraps Road Schedule with 48-3 Win

GUNNISON, Colo. – Humboldt State football avoided a potential trap game Saturday and capped its regular season road schedule with a 48-3 road victory over Western State Colorado.

The Lumberjacks led from start to finish in the non-conference win and improved to 8-1 overall. HSU will host Super Region Four leader and conference rival Central Washington in a de facto Great Northwest Athletic Conference title game in Redwood Bowl next Saturday. The game will be broadcast to a national audience on Watch ESPN and the ESPN app.

Quarterback Robert Webber shined in the win against the Mountaineers. He completed 21-of-29 passes for 380 yards and three touchdowns and cemented his place as the GNAC's top passer and one of the nation's best signal callers. Webber entered the afternoon ranked second in the country in passing efficiency and the senior from Corona, Calif., did nothing to blemish that spot versus Western State Colorado.

Webber connected with favorite target Chase Krivashei to put the Jacks on the board with 12:23 left in the first quarter. The touchdown moved Krivashei to No. 1 in the program record book for career touchdown receptions with 36.

HSU added 14 more points in the first quarter to take a commanding 21-0 lead. Jabar Byrd caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Webber followed by an 85-yard interception return for a score by Thaddeus Philyaw.

A Max Smith field goal from 22 yards out gave the Mountaineers their only points of the game less than a minute into the second frame.

The "Corona Connection" struck again with a 35-yard touchdown strike from Webber to Krivashei with 5:53 left before intermission. Jose Morales added a 29-yard field goal to wrap an 11-play, 63-yard drive which gave HSU a 31-3 halftime advantage.

HSU's rushing attack struggled to find one top producer against Western State Colorado so a team effort helped power the Green and Gold ground game. Ja'Quan Gardner led the way with 14 carries for 42 yards and a touchdown that opened the Jacks' second-half scoring effort. Byrd and Isaiah Hall combined for 68 yards rushing.

The third quarter featured touchdown runs of seven and 16 yards from Gardner and Hall, respectively, and the rout was on. Morales split the uprights from 33 yards out with 2:14 left to play to conclude HSU's high-scoring afternoon.

The HSU defense showed its ability to dominate the opposition limiting Western State Colorado to just 215 yards of total offense and 10 total first downs. Curtis Williams and Willie Mitchell led the unit with six tackles apiece, and Williams was responsible for a forced fumble and a pair of tackles for loss.
