SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Humboldt State women's basketball nearly overcame a 25-point third quarter deficit in Friday's 60-54 road loss to Cal State San Bernardino.
The Lumberjacks cut the Coyotes lead to five with 2:32 left in the fourth quarter following a
Kindall Murie 3-pointer, but they were unable to close the gap. HSU outscored San Bernardino 39-24 in the second half after trailing by 21 at intermission.
San Bernardino outrebounded HSU 47-38 and grabbed 20 boards off the offensive glass.
The Coyotes got out to a 6-0 lead and controlled the pace of play for the first 20 minutes. San Bernardino had a 36-15 advantage at the break. Mya Johnson led the home team with 17 points, and she scored eight in the first half. She finished with a team-high 10 rebounds.
HSU's
Merritt Schoenhofer made an impact in her first start of the season. She recorded her first career double-double with 17 points and 12 boards, both of which were career-high totals. Schoenhofer was 6-of-9 shooting and went 2-of-2 from outside the arc.
The Green and Gold return to action Saturday night against UC San Diego. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
