Webber Matches Program Record In Big Victory Over Simon Fraser

ARCATA, Calif. – Behind five touchdown passes from quarterback Robert Webber, Humboldt State football rolled past Simon Fraser with a 72-14 victory Saturday night in Redwood Bowl.

Webber's five touchdowns matched a single-game program high and tied Jacob Kadle's Redwood Bowl record five touchdown passes against Montana Tech in 2001.

HSU improved to 2-0 with the win, while Simon Fraser slipped to 0-3 and extends its losing streak to 26 straight.

After HSU scored the first two touchdowns, the Clan seemed to find the will to climb back into the game, cutting the Jacks' margin to 21-14 midway through the second quarter. But Chase Krivashei hauled in a 28-yard scoring strike from Webber, and Malcolm Hale was next with a 21-yarder before half.

"Quite frankly, I thought we came out flat, but then settled in and played a really good second half," said HSU Head Coach Rob Smith. "It's always nice when you get to play everybody that you can play on the roster, and we did that tonight. Credit to the kids because they're the ones that came out and got it done."

HSU accumulated a whopping 636 yards of total offense on the night, as Webber's passing was supplemented by Ja'Quan Gardner's 121 yards rushing on just 12 carries with a score. Isaiah Hall contributed 60 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns as the Jacks were able to go deep into their bench in the second half after establishing a large lead. The defense bolstered the Jacks' efforts by holding the Clan to just 193 total yards.

HSU struck often in the second half, opening up in a big way just 20 seconds into the quarter with a John Todd 58-yard touchdown pass from Webber. Jabar Byrd scored on a 23-yard run later in the quarter, and Marjani Ellison caught 34-yard pass from backup quarterback Adam Wood early in the fourth.

Hall had two scoring runs late as HSU continued to pile on in the fourth. The Jacks capitalized on late Simon Fraser mistakes including a muffed kickoff return that led to a touchdown and a high snap that ended up as a team safety that accounted for the 72-14 final. The Jacks ultimately scored the final 51 points of the contest.

Next up on HSU's schedule is a road trip to Monmouth, Ore., the home of Great Northwest Athletic Conference foe Western Oregon. Kickoff for next Saturday's meeting with the Wolves is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
