Football Set for Rematch with Central Washington

| By:
ARCATA, Calif.  – Humboldt State football returns to Redwood Bowl Saturday for a rematch with Central Washington. The Lumberjacks (1-6, 1-4 GNAC) are looking for their second home victory following back-to-back road losses.

"We let some opportunities slip," said Head Coach Damaro Wheeler. "Three out of the last four games we have had opportunities to either tie or take the lead, but we find a way to hurt ourselves with the turnover, penalties or allowing a big play on defense. It's not enough to think we can win, we have to prepare to win and it starts with practice."

HSU overcame a 21-7 deficit to make it a four-point game last weekend in Monmouth, Ore., but the Wolves' defense took advantage of Green and Gold mistakes to pull away. A bright spot in the 45-24 loss to Western Oregon was the evolution of the Jacks offense. Joey Sweeney tossed a pair of touchdown passes and Tyree Marzetta ran for 140 yards and a touchdown in the team's best offensive performance of the season.

Central Washington shut out HSU 49-0 in their week two meeting in Yakima, Wash. The Wildcats dominated in all facets of the game except time of possession. The Green and Gold tried three different quarterbacks in the loss, but Wheeler expects his team will bring a different attitude into this weekend's rematch.

"We felt like we were trying to do too much and a lot of guys were trying to overcompensate for their teammates," said Wheeler. "We will have a few wrinkles and we have extended our playbook since game two."

The Wildcats enter Saturday's game with a 6-2 overall record and a perfect 6-0 mark in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. Central Washington has won three straight and is 3-1 on the road this season.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink to Saturday's game in support of breast cancer awareness. HSU students, faculty and staff receive free admission to the with campus ID.
