Women’s Basketball Overcomes Cold Spell with Hatch Treys

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Fans on the North Coast have been experiencing some much-needed precipitation, but it was Madeline Hatch who brought the rain with a shower of 3-pointers in Friday night's road win. The Humboldt State women's basketball team overcame a second-half offensive drought en route to a 68-56 victory over Sonoma State.

The Lumberjacks (3-1, 1-0 CCAA) led 30-12 late in the second quarter, but they squandered the lead with seven scoreless minutes in the third quarter. Hatch provided a much-needed spark down the stretch, and her 3-point shooting performance spurred the team to conference win No. 1.

"It's tough to win on the road, and I'm proud of the team for getting the win," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "We had some lapses with concentration and missed assignments but those are the type of things we can learn and grow from."

Hatch connected on a career-best eight 3-pointers and scored a team-leading 26 points, and she filled up the basket when her team needed it most.

The Green and Gold got three consecutive treys courtesy of the junior to start the fourth quarter and sustain the Jacks' game-changing run. HSU trailed 40-38 with 2:29 left in the third frame, but went on a 23-2 run to take control of the game for good.

"Maddy Hatch carried us in the 2nd half and we did a great job of finding her," said Bento-Jackson. "We've talked a lot about clock management and Tyra was terrific tonight down the stretch."

Alexia Thrower finished the game with her third double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 boards. Tyra Turner dished out a team-best six assists to go with eight points.

HSU visits San Marcos, Calif., for a meeting with the Cougars on Thursday, Nov. 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
