Football Falls in Overtime Heartbreaker to Cougars

ARCATA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific's Jacob Hall connected on a 23-yard field goal to deal the Humboldt State football team a heartbreaking overtime loss, 20-17, Saturday afternoon in Redwood Bowl.

The Lumberjacks moved to 1-8 with the loss and 1-6 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

An interception ended the home team's first drive, and the Cougars took advantage. Azusa Pacific marched down the field after Joseph Sweeney's pick and running back Aaron Baltazar barrelled into the end zone from three yards out to put the visitors on the board.

Tyree Marzetta capped a 16-play, 77-yard scoring drive with a one-yard touchdown run to even the score at the start of the second quarter. Marzetta finished the game with 80 rushing yards on 24 carries.

The Cougars used a 42-yard pass play on their next drive to get just outside of the HSU red zone, and their rushing attack did the rest as Baltazar once again crossed the goal line. It was his second and final touchdown of the afternoon, but the back finished with 93 rushing yards.

On the ensuing drive, Azusa Pacific's Willie Fair and Ma'ake Muti drove Sweeney into the turf on a third-and-long play that forced the Green and Gold signal caller from the game. Sweeney was replaced by Andrew Tingstad on HSU's next possession.

Tingstad showed off his arm and legs as he guided the Jacks to a game-tying touchdown just before the half. The sophomore scored from eight yards out on a quarterback keeper, and the teams went into the locker room in a 14-14 deadlock.

Azusa Pacific and HSU traded third-quarter field goals before a scoreless fourth quarter forced overtime. Tingstad left the game on the third quarter drive that led to Jose Morales' 37-yard field goal that made it 17-all. The Jacks quarterback injured his throwing arm on a two-yard scamper and was relieved by senior Brenden Davis who remained under center for the remainder of the game.

HSU got the ball first in overtime and a costly intentional grounding penalty spoiled its drive. Morales missed the 37-yard field goal attempt, which flipped possession to the Cougars.

Azusa Pacific ran the ball five consecutive times with Baltazar and set up the game-winning field goal.

The Jacks' defense was the story of the game as it surrendered a season-low 20 points in the loss. Demetrick Watts and Moses Finau combined for 24 tackles. Finau registered 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Adam Herrera picked off Azusa Pacific's quarterback for his second interception of the season.

The Green and Gold make their annual Canadian sojourn as they face Simon Fraser in next Saturday's season finale. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
