Football Shut Out in GNAC Opener

YAKIMA, Wash. – It was all Wildcats Saturday afternoon on the windswept field of Zaepfel Stadium as Central Washington dealt Humboldt State its first shutout since 2007, 49-0.

The Lumberjacks made the 13-hour drive north for their first conference game of the season, but suffered from the same issues they had in the season opener. HSU was unable to find success on offense, as the Green and Gold tried three different quarterbacks, and the defense struggled to get a stop allowing 28 first downs.

"We need to stop shooting ourselves in the foot," said HSU Head Coach Damaro Wheeler. "We have to find a way to finish in every aspect."

Central Washington put 28 points on the board at the half, and the Wildcats leaned on bruising running back Cedric Cooper. Cooper's dominance was evident in Central Washington's second drive as he rumbled for a combined 45 yards on four straight handoffs. He finished with 178 yards on 11 carries, including a 60-yard touchdown scamper in the third quarter.

HSU's offense manufactured its best scoring opportunity midway through the third quarter. The Green and Gold drove to the Central Washington 12 yard line and attempted a field goal from 29 yards out. Jose Morales' kick was blocked by Tyler Hasty and returned 79 yards for a touchdown to give the Wildcats a 42-0 advantage.

A three-quarterback rotation featuring starter Joey Sweeney and backups Sohail Moshini and Andrew Tingstad failed to give the Jacks' offense a boost. The HSU signal callers combined to go 10-of-28 passing (35.7 percent) for 116 yards and an interception.

"All three quarterbacks competed and didn't give up," said Wheeler.

On the flip side, Reilly Hennessey directed the Wildcat passing attack with precision completing 9-of-17 passes for 112 yards and three touchdowns. Hennessey was picked off by Moses Finau on the Wildcats' first drive of the second quarter.

Top defensive performers for the Jacks included Adam Herrera and Isaiah Sires-Wils who finished with 10 and nine tackles, respectively. Latufeao Kolopeaua recorded a solo sack for the Green and Gold.

The Jacks will have to put this loss, like Yakima, in the rearview as they host Western Oregon in Redwood Bowl on Saturday, Sept. 22. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
