Women's Basketball Travels to Face Pioneers, Otters

| By:
ARCATA, Calif. — The Humboldt State women's basketball team hits the road this weekend as it faces Cal State East Bay on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. followed by Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Lumberjacks moved to 8-5 overall and 6-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association after securing a home sweep last weekend against Cal State Los Angeles and Cal State Dominguez Hills.

"Obviously it's nice to get wins, and it's probably a little more special when they're at home in front of our home crowd," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "Most importantly, I was pleased to see the progress that we've made collectively as a team in particular on the defensive end to pull out these two wins."

Senior forward Isa Conde was honored as the CCAA Women's Basketball Player of the Week after averaging 23.0 points and 5.0 rebounds to help break the Jacks' three-game losing streak. Junior forward Alexia Thrower will also look to contribute offensively this weekend as she averages 15.8 points per game which is good enough for the third-best in the conference.

"We are very familiar with East Bay, and we know what to expect," said Bento-Jackson. "They have two different looks offensively, meaning sometimes they play with two bigs while other times we might see a big and four guards. We've seen so many different styles so we are putting the emphasis on what we need to do and what our defensive game plan is going to be going into the game. We just have to build off the energy and intensity that we had in particular in that Dominguez Hills game on Saturday."

East Bay looks to get back into winning form after dropping consecutive games against Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino this past week. The result moved the Pioneers to 7-9 overall, and they currently sit at 4-6 in the conference. Senior forward Savannah McGill averages a double-double on the season and leads her team with 10.5 points and 11 boards per game.

Cal State Monterey Bay was unable to capture its first win last week as the Otters dropped games to San Bernardino before falling to Cal Poly Pomona. Monterey Bay is 0-13 overall.  Senior guard Jordana Price leads the offensive charge for the Otters as she averages a team-best 12.6 points per game. Sophomore forward Camille Parker will attempt to give Monterey Bay extra possessions as she leads the team with 6.2 rebounds.
