Men's Basketball's Home Streak Snapped by Cougars

ARCATA, Calif. – Kameron Curl scored a team-high 20 points, but it wasn't enough as the Humboldt State men's basketball saw its home winning streak snapped with a 91-72 loss Thursday night to Cal State San Marcos.

The Lumberjacks moved to 14-7 overall, 8-5 in conference play and 9-1 at home.

"Tonight was a classic case of not being focused," said HSU Head Coach Steve Kinder. "Top to bottom our performance lacked inspiration and heart. Our team will look directly in the mirror, and we will analyze our problems individually and collectively. San Marcos did a nice job handling tough traveling circumstances and played extremely well tonight."

San Marcos got to work immediately building an early lead. J.R. Williams drained a 3-pointer to get things started for the Cougars, and the visitors led 14-7 following the first media timeout. HSU pulled within one, 19-18, midway through the first half following a Calvin Young II free throw, but San Marcos answered with a 14-3 spurt over the next 4:30. The Jacks were unable to trim the lead to single digits at intermission as the Cougars took a 41-29 advantage into the break.

Despite a significant advantage in first-half personal fouls, 11-1 in favor of the home team, the Green and Gold struggled to keep up with the hot shooting Cougars. San Marcos connected on 59.3 percent of its shots and went 8-of-13 from long range in the first 20 minutes.

Curl scored 16 of his team-leading 20 points in the second half as the Jacks tried to will themselves back into the ballgame. San Marcos kept the home team at arms' length as the visitors held on to a double-figure lead for a majority of the first 10 minutes of the half. With 12:03 remaining and the Jacks trailing 58-45, the home team's fortunes began to change as the visiting shooters cooled and the Cougars began to turn over the basketball. A 7-0 run that ended with another Curl trey at 10:01 got the Green and Gold back within striking distance. HSU trimmed the lead to five, 66-61, four minutes later and the momentum seemed to turn before a devastating goal-tending call sparked the Cougars. San Marcos took off on a 13-2 run and put the game out of reach for good as it rolled to only its second conference win of the season.

Young followed Curl's lead with 18 points, while Jackson Strong and Justin Everett turned in 10 points apiece. Young finished the game with a team-leading seven boards and a season-best five blocks.

HSU hosts UC San Diego in Lumberjack Arena Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
