Pioneers Hold Off Late Rally By HSU For Four-Set Win

HAYWARD, Calif.---  Despite Lenox Loving, Emma Flewell and Summer Hansen combining for 33 kills, Humboldt State saw their rally fall short in a four-set loss (16, 25, 25-17, 12-25, 25-23) to the Cal State East Bay Pioneers this afternoon in Hayward, Calif.  The trio of Odelia Ryan, Kayla Costello and Carla Crespo combined for 41 digs this afternoon for the Lumberjacks.
 
FIRST SET:  Cal State East Bay (7-17, 6-10 CCAA) took a 4-0 lead to start the match.  The Pioneers increased their lead to 13-6 on a kill by Jasmyne Love.  They scored five of the next six points to take a 18-7 lead.  Humboldt State came right back and cut the deficit to 19-11 keyed by two kills by Lenox Loving and one by Emma Flewell.  The Pioneers came right back and took a 24-13 lead on a kill by Eliza Cannon.  The Lumberjacks would not go away as they cut the deficit to 24-16 capped by a kill by Lexi Riggs.  CSUEB finished the set off with a kill by Steena Hubbard to take the first set 25-16.
 
SECOND SET:  The Lumberjacks came out on fire in the second set as they took a 6-1 lead including recording four straight points with Juliana Bertolucci serving capped by a Loving kill.  HSU increased its lead to 13-5 keyed by two service aces by Carla Crespo.  A kill by Riley Tishlarich gave HSU a 18-9 lead, but the Pioneers would not go away as they cut the 'Jack lead to 18-13.  A kill by Flewell gave HSU a 21-15 lead. The 'Jacks recorded four of the final six points to take the set 25-17 and even the match at 1-1.
 
THIRD SET:  After the intermission, Cal State East Bay took a 11-2 lead.  The Pioneers increased their lead to 18-6, but a kill by Summer Hansen and a hitting error by the Pioneers cut the deficit to 18-8.  Cal State East Bay finished off the set taking seven of the final 12 points, 25-12 and took a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
FOURTH SET:  Cal State East Bay took a 6-4 lead in the fourth set and increased its lead to 12-6.  The Lumberjacks came right back and cut the CSUEB lead to 16-12 on a block by Malia Coyle.  HSU scored six of the next eight points to tie the match at 18-18 keyed by kills by Coyle, Hansen and Loving.  CSUEB followed that recording the next five points to take a 23-18 lead.  HSU came right back and tied the set at 22-23 on back to back kills by Hansen.  The Pioneers finished the match off taking the next two points to take the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
 
LUMBERJACK LEADERS:  Humboldt State (5-18, 1-14 CCAA) was led by Lenox Loving's 17 kills, Kayla Costello's two service aces, Malia Coyle's two blocks, Riley Tishlarich's 18 assists and Odelia Ryan's 17 digs.  Also recording double digits in assists was Juliana Bertolucci with 12.  Two other 'Jacks recorded double digits in digs in Kayla Costello (13) and Carla Crespo (11).
 
SENIOR NIGHT:  HSU will host Sonoma State this Tuesday, November 12 at 5pm in its home finale.  The Lumberjacks will recognize their three seniors prior to the match in Kayla Costello, Emma Flewell and Odelia Ryan.
