ARCATA, Calif. — In the midst of a four-game winning streak, the Humboldt State women's basketball team will head south for a pair of games between Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State Los Angeles. The game versus Dominguez Hills will be played on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before the Jacks take on Cal State LA, Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Green and Gold hold a 15-6 overall record and are 13-5 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play as they rank third in the conference standings.
The Lumberjacks enter the week after securing hard-fought victories over Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino. Junior forward Alexia Thrower led the way for the North Coast squad as she averaged 25 points and 12.5 rebounds over the two games and was tabbed the Women's Basketball CCAA Player of the Week. Thrower has proven herself as one of the conference's most versatile players as she ranks third in scoring (17.4) and sixth in rebounding (10.5) in the CCAA. Senior forward Isamar Conde can also score points efficiently as she averages 16.2 points per game, good enough for the fourth-highest average. Junior point guard Tyra Turner has done a tremendous job creating for her playmakers as she leads the conference in assist/turnover ratio at 1.7, and averages five assists per game. The San Bernardino native is also a stout defender and her 2.5 steals per game is ranked second in the conference.
"As we prepare for Dominguez Hills we put a lot of focus on the defensive end," said Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "We want to make them uncomfortable, not just their individual players but collectively as a team and try to take them out of what they are used to doing. On the offensive end, as always, we just want to stay in attack mode and be very aggressive. It's on the road, things are always tougher on the road, and we expect to get Dominguez Hill's best punch so we got to come ready to play."
Last week, Dominguez Hills dropped games to UC San Diego and Cal State San Marcos which extended its losing streak to three straight. The result moves Dominguez to 12-12 overall and 8-10 in the CCAA. Senior guard Nautica Morrow averages a team-leading 14.6 points and a conference-best 3.2 steals per game.
Cal State Los Angeles is fresh off a pair of losses to Cal State San Marcos and UC San Diego as they hold an 8-15 overall record and 5-14 in conference play. The Golden Eagles will look to senior guard Chiderah Uzowuru as she leads LA with 13.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Junior guard Madison Adams is the CCAA's most accurate sharpshooter as she connects on 41.7 percent from long range while averaging 10.7 points per contest. Junior Rachael DiRegolo continues to be a presence inside as the 6-2 center leads the conference with 2.4 blocks per game.
