Men’s Track & Field Inks Stellar Signees for 2020

| By:
ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State men's track & field program announced signings for its 2020 outdoor squad.

Jacob Furbee, Chance Hefter, Matthew Mason, Isaac Arthur, Jason Holland-Morrison, Grant Christian and Finn Tyvoll highlight the class which will eventually grow to at least 20 newcomers covering all event groups.

The Lumberjacks also add transfers Aaron McChristian and Spencer Mills as well as freshmen Shane Burton, Patrick Riley, Alejandro Cerero, Micah Chitraroff, CJ Duncan, Isaac Figueroa, Nathan Coker and Jacob Taylor.

"This is our best recruiting class in the past several years," said HSU track & field Head Coach Sarah Ingram. "Our men's squad will roughly double our roster, and begin rebuilding the necessary depth for competitiveness as a team at the conference level and beyond. Individually, these student-athletes are a solid crew of young men with good character, boasting strong academics and athletic marks, as well as leadership qualities. Furbee, Hefter, and Mason will make an immediate impact across our jumps, throws, and sprint groups, and the depth of our incoming sprinters is strong. Our middle distance and long-distance recruit class are also some of the strongest our program has seen in years and will show immediate progress with the fall cross country season. We're optimistic about the growth and excited for this young team to continue developing over the next few seasons."

"This is a promising group," added Head Distance Coach Jamey Harris. "Jason and Christian have a great mix of middle-distance speed and cross country endurance. That range will serve them well as they transition to college-level competition. Finn made a big breakthrough this spring and we think that kind of progress will continue. There's also great depth to this recruiting class. There are a handful of guys who could contribute for us in the middle-distances and a handful of guys who could contribute in the longer races plus another few who really have a lot of potential to develop."

A high jumper from Morro Bay High School, Furbee excelled in athletics as well as in the classroom. A two-sport athlete competing in track & field as well as soccer, he earned an impressive 4.0 GPA. The Los Osos, Calif., product has a personal record of 6' 8" in the high jump which ranked him fourth in California this past season. He plans to major in kinesiology.

"Jacob is a raw and talented student-athlete, he knows how to handle adversity and has a passion for track & field," said Ingram. "He will make a positive impact for our program."

Hefter, a 6-7, 300-pound, three-sport athlete from Newark Memorial High School, threw shot put and discus while also competing on the wrestling and water polo teams. Hefter finished 17th in the CIF State Championships in shot put after winning the North Coast Section Bayshore Championship in both the shot and discus, and going almost undefeated in both events his entire senior season. He plans to major in marine biology.

"Chance will be a tremendous addition to our throws squad," said Ingram. "His competitive drive will be an asset for our program, and he's definitely one to watch over the next few years."

Mason is a 100m and 200m standout sprinter from Casa Grande High School, boasting a 3.8 GPA. He placed 20th and fifth at last year's NCS Meet of Champions in the 100m and 200m, respectively, and second in both events at the Redwood Empire Championships, while also helping both 4x100 and 4x400 relay squads to second and third place finishes. He plans to major in film.

"Matthew is the hard-working team player we are looking for to lead our sprint recruiting class," said Ingram. "We are excited to welcome him aboard."

Arthur is a 6-2 sprinter from El Camino Fundamental High School. The Carmichael, Calif., native was the outdoor track & field team captain and also earned MVP honors. He plans to major in environmental resources engineering. He joins his brother Malachi who posted the fastest 400m mark for Humboldt State in 2019, and two El Camino teammates, incoming transfer Aaron McChristian and freshmen Jacob Taylor, both sprinters.

A three-year member of the varsity track & field program at Franklin High, Holland-Morrison will bring talent and experience to HSU's distance team. He competed in the 800m and 1600m and was a three-time Franklin High Distance MVP. Holland-Morrison was the second place finisher in the 800m at the Sac-Joaquin Section D1 Finals and finished 15th in the Sac-Joaquin Section D2 Cross Country Championships this past season. He plans to major in elementary education.

Christian, an Edmonds-Woodway High School product, is a Washington native and an impressive runner in both cross country and middle-distance. He was the 2017 Cross Country Academic State Champion and a two-time district champion in the 800m. He also finished 6th and 9th in the 800m at the last two Washington State 3A Championships. He plans to major in fisheries biology.

A Portland, Ore., native, Tyvoll was a cross country team captain at Wilson High School. He was a three-time state qualifier in cross country and improved his 3000m personal best to 8:47.11 during the 2019 track campaign. He plans to major in kinesiology.
