HSU To Host Nationally Ranked Cougars and Tritons

ARCATA, Calif..---  Humboldt State's women's basketball team will conclude its three-game home stand this week with a pair of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) games this Thursday and Saturday, January 9 and 11.  The Lumberjacks will entertain No. 24 Cal State San Marcos this Thursday and No. 22 UC San Diego this Saturday.  Tip-off for both contests is set for 5:30pm at Lumberjack Arena. 
 
RECAP OF HSU'S LAST GAME:  Humboldt State is coming off a 79-72 victory over Stanislaus State this past Saturday evening at Lumberjack Arena.  Four players scored in double digits for the 'Jacks paced by Madeline Hatch's season high 18 points while Alexia Thrower added 17 points.  Gabrielle Carbajal chipped in 15 points and Molly Dixon added 11 points for the victors.  The Lumberjacks connected on 14 of their attempts from beyond the arc with Hatch's six three-pointers leading the way followed by Carbajal's three.  HSU forced 14 turnovers by the Warriors while the 'Jacks had 17 assists paced by Tyra Turner's six.
 
UPDATE ON THE LUMBERJACKS:  The Lumberjacks improved to 9-4 overall and 5-3 in the CCAA, which places them in a four-way tie for third place with UC San Diego, Cal Poly Pomona and Stanislaus State. The 'Jacks are one game out of second place (Cal State San Marcos) and 2.5 games out of first place (Cal State East Bay).
 
HSU is averaging 66 points per game while giving up 60.0 points per game.  The Lumberjacks are being out-rebounded 38.3 to 33.3 while forcing 16.4 turnovers per game.  HSU is averaging 12.7 assists per game and has posted a +1.1 assist to turnover ratio. 
 
Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in Alexia Thrower (21.5 ppg), Madeline Hatch (10.4 ppg) and Molly Dixon (10.0 ppg).  Thrower leads the team with her 10.6 rebounding average, 52.7% shooting from the field, 23 steals and seven blocked shots. Tyra Turner has dished out a team leading 60 assists and shooting a team leading 78.3% from the charity stripe.  Dixon has made a team leading 26 three's while Gabrielle Carbajal has connected on a team leading 35.8% of her attempts from three-point land. 
 
AMONGST THE NATION'S LEADERS:  In the latest NCAA Division II women's basketball statistics report that was released on January 6, Humboldt State's Alexia Thrower is ninth in the nation in scoring, 12th in total rebounds, 20th in rebounding and 21st in double-doubles.  Senior guard Tyra Turner is 17th in assists per game, 34th in total assists and 38th in assist/turnover ratio.  As a team, the Lumberjacks are fourth in turnovers per game, sixth in fewest turnovers and 28th in assist/turnover ratio.
 
26-8 AT LUMBERJACK ARENA: The Lumberjacks are 26-8 at Lumberjack Arena since the beginning of the 2017-18 season.  Humboldt State is 7-1 this season with its only loss a 76-73 blemish to Western Washington on Nov. 9. 
 
EIGHTH IN THE REGION:  In the latest D2SIDA NCAA Division II West Region Poll that was released on January 6, Humboldt State is eighth.  The top five teams are 1.) Alaska Anchorage, 2.) Hawaii Pacific, 3.) Cal State San Marcos, 4.) UC San Diego, 5.) Azusa Pacific, 6.) Northwest Nazarene, 7.) Cal State East Bay, 8.) Humboldt State, 9.) Point Loma and T10.) Western Washington and Cal Poly Pomona. 
 
MOVIN' ON UP:  Tyra Turner is moving on up the career lists at Humboldt State.  She is second in assists (445), third in steals (220), seventh in free throws made (253) and ninth in points (967). 
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE:  Two Lumberjacks have recorded double-doubles this season in Alexia Thrower and Tyra Turner.  Thrower has six double-doubles including one each of the Lumberjacks' last three games while Turner has one.
 
11.1: Humboldt State is just turning the ball over 11.1 times per game while forcing 16.4 turnovers per game by its opponents.  The Lumberjacks are recording 7.0 steals per game paced by Alexia Thrower's 23 followed by Tyra Turner's 18.  Molly Dixon has 14 and Gabrielle Carbajal has 12 steals this season.
 
12.7:  The Lumberjacks are averaging 12.7 assists per game with Tyra Tuner leading the way with her 60 total assists and just 30 turnovers in 11 games.  Three other Lumberjacks have a positive assist to turnover ratio in Gabrielle Carbajal (32 assists, 17 turnovers), Molly Dixon (18 assists, 13 turnovers) and Emily Packham (four assists, three turnovers). 
 
COUGARS IN REVIEW:  Cal State San Marcos enters its game with the Lumberjacks with a 11-2 overall record including a 6-2 CCAA record.  The Cougars are 4-1 in their last five games including splitting their two games last week at home losing 65-61 to Cal State East Bay and defeating Cal State Monterey Bay 73-48.  They are averaging 65.1 points per game while giving up 56.1 points per game.  CSUSM is out-rebounding its opponents 36.9 to 34.8.
 
Three players are averaging double digits in scoring in Jon'Nae Vermillion (13.9 ppg), Emma Forel (11.4 ppg) and Dynnah Buckner (10.8 ppg).  Forel leads the Cougars with her 8.8 rebounding average, 19 steals and 59% shooting from the field.  Stephanie Custodio leads the team with her 54 assists and 88.6% shooting from the line while Kelsey Forrester has connected on a team leading 22 three's and 48.9% shooting from three-point land.  Akayla Hackson has blocked a team high 10 shots.
 
The all-time series since 2015 between the Lumberjacks and Cougars is tied at 4-4.  The two teams split the series last year with the Cougars winning 71-69 in San Marcos on Nov. 29, 2018 and HSU winning 88-70 in Arcata on Jan. 24, 2019.
 
TRITONS IN REVIEW:  UC San Diego enters its Thursday contest at Stanislaus State with a 9-4 overall record and a 5-3 CCAA record.  The Tritons are averaging 68.5 points per game while giving up 61.3 point per game. They are being out-rebounded 38.0 to 37.7.  Two players are averaging double digits in scoring in Julia Macabuhay (17.5 ppg) and Tyla Turner (12.0 ppg).  Macabuhay leads the team with her 46.4% shooting from the field and 60 assists while Turner has a team leading 16 steals.  Sydney Sharp leads the Tritons with her 6.7 rebounding average and 87.5% shooting from the line along with her 26 three's made.  Macabuhay is shooting a team leading 42% from three-point land. 
 
The Tritons are 3-2 in their last five games including going 1-1 at home last weekend.  They lost 59-58 to Cal State Monterey Bay, but came back on Saturday to defeat Cal State East Bay 70-58.
 
UC San Diego leads the all-time series with the Lumberjacks 18-10 since 2007.  The Tritons have won eight of the last nine meetings including both last season 72-58 in San Marcos and 72-61 in Arcata.
