ARCATA, Calif--- Humboldt State women's basketball team will finish off its season beginning three-game trip this Wednesday, November 17 with a 5:30pm non-conference game in San Rafael, Calif., against Dominican University. This will be the start of a home-away series between the two teams with the 'Jacks hosting Dominican on Saturday, November 27 at 2pm in HSU's home opener.
COACHING STAFF: The 'Jacks are coached by sixth-year head coach
Michelle Bento-Jackson. Coach Bento-Jackson is 216-190 in her sixteen years as a head coach. During those 16 years, she also has had two losing seasons. She is assisted by Humboldt State Alum and former Lumberjack men's basketball player Guillermo Blas.
LAST WEEK'S GAMES: Humboldt State went 0-2 in its two games in Seattle, Wash., this past weekend. The 'Jacks started their season with a 68-56 loss to Western Washington on Friday.
Citlaly Davalos paced the Lumberjacks with 16 points and 7 rebounds while
Madison Parry chipped in 15 points and
Ashley Taylor Peralta added 11 points. HSU trailed by as much as 20 points, but the cut the deficit to just nine with 33 seconds left in the third quarter. The Lumberjack could not get any closer than the nine points.
HSU came back the night day with a 54-52 heartbreaking loss to Seattle Pacific.
Kaz Parks led HSU with her 18 points. Parry added nine points, nine rebounds and three steals while
Julia Iman chipped in eight points and recorded four steals.
Mariah Barraza scored eight points for the 'Jacks. HSU had a chance to win the game in the final seconds, but its attempt fell short as SPU took the 54-52 victory.
UPDATE ON THE 'JACKS: Humboldt State is averaging 54.0 points per game while giving up 61.0 points per game. HSU is averaging 29.5 rebounds per game while its opponents are averaging 39.5 rebounds per game.
Madison Parry leads the 'Jacks with her 12.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while
Citlaly Davalos is averaging 11.0 points per game and shooting ta team best 44.4% from the field. Davalos leads the team with her four made three-point field goals while
Mariah Barraza is shooting a team high 42.9% from beyond the arc. As a team, HSU is shooting 88.9% from the line. Four players are shooting over 80% from the line. Davalos and Barraza each are two-for-two while Parry is shooting 87.5% from the line and
Kaz Parks is shooting 83.3%. Four players have dished out a team leading three assists in Parry, Parks,
Julia Iman and
Ashley Taylor Peralta. Parry leads the team with her five steals with Iman right behind her at four.
REGION MATCH-UP All four non-conference games for the 'Jacks are against NCAA Division II West Region opponents which are very important for rankings. HSU started 0-2 with losses against Western Washington and Seattle from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). The 'Jacks will finish off their non-conference schedule with two games against Dominican who are members of the PacWest Conference. The CCAA, GNAC and PacWest Conferences are all members of the NCAA Division II West Region.
22-GAME CCAA SCHEDULE: The 'Jacks will open up their 22-game CCAA schedule on December 2-4, when they host SF State and Cal State Monterey Bay. HSU will host the Gators on Dec. 2 and the Otters on Dec. 4. Tip-off for both games are set for 5:30pm at Lumberjack Arena.
CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LUMBERJACK ARENA: Humboldt State will host the 2021-22 CCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, March 3-5 at Lumberjack Arena. The top six teams will receive a berth to the CCAA Championships. March 3 will be the quarterfinal round with the top two seeds receiving a bye. The semi-final round games are set for March 4 with the championship game set for March 5. The winner of the CCAA Championships will receive the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Championships.
DOMINICAN: Dominican went 1-1 in its two games in Chico this past weekend. The Penguins defeated Sonoma State 72-55 and followed that with a last second 79-77 loss to Chico State. Riley Friauf leads the way for Dominican with her 27.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 92% shooting from the line and 61.8% shooting from the field. Alessandra Saise is averaging 11.5 points per game and shooting a team best 60% from beyond the arc. Brittney Cedeno is averaging 11.0 points per game while connecting on a team high five threes. The Penguins is averaging 74.5 points and 28.0 rebounds per game while shooting 48% from the field. Their opponents are averaging 67.0 points and 39.0 rebounds per game.
ALL-TIME SERIES (HSU vs. DUC): Humboldt State leads the all-time series 6-2 including winning the last meeting 63-47 in Arcata on November 30, 2019. Dominican won the previous two meetings before that 81-70 in Hayward on Nov. 27, 2016, and 76-73 in San Rafael on Nov 29, 20214.
