ARCATA, Calif--- Humboldt State women's basketball team will return home to Lumberjack Arena for the first time since February 27, 2020 when the 'Jacks host Dominican (Calif.) in their final non-conference game of the regular season this Saturday, November 27. Tip-off for Saturday's game is set for 2pm.
COACHING STAFF: The 'Jacks are coached by sixth-year head coach
Michelle Bento-Jackson. Coach Bento-Jackson is 216-191 in her sixteen years as a head coach. During those 16 years, she also has had two losing seasons. She is assisted by Humboldt State Alum and former Lumberjack men's basketball player Guillermo Blas.
LAST WEEK'S GAME: For the second straight game, Humboldt State lost a heartbreaker this time a 72-70 loss at Dominican on November 17. HSU trailed by nine points early in the fourth quarter and rallied to cut the deficit to two, but that is as close as the 'Jacks could get in a two-point loss to the Penguins.
Julia Iman paced HSU with her 18-point, 15-rebound performance. Three other players scored in double digits in
Mariah Barraza (13 points),
Ashley Peralta (11 points) and
Madison Parry (11 points). Riley Friauf paced the Penguins with her 22-points, 14-rebound performance.
UPDATE ON THE 'JACKS: Humboldt State enters Saturday's game with the Penguins with a 0-3 record. The 'Jacks are averaging 59.3 points while giving up 64.7 points per game. They are being out-rebounded 39.7 to 33.3. HSU's defense is forcing 19.0 turnovers per game while holding its opponents to just 19% shooting from three-point land.
Madison Parry's leads HSU with her 11.7 scoring average followed by
Julia Iman at 10.0 points per game,
Kaz Parks at 9.0 points per game. Iman leads the team with her 9.3 rebound average while Parry has recorded a team leading six steals.
Ashley Peralta leads the 'Jacks with her eight assists.
Citlaly Davalos is shooting a team high 43.5% from the field while
Mariah Barraza is shooting a team best 42.9% from three's with her team high six three-point field goals made. Parks leads the team with her 83.3% shooting from the line.
DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Julia Iman recorded her first double-double for the 'Jacks. She scored a season high 18 points and grabbed a season high 15 rebounds (10 defensive) for HSU against the Penguins on November 17 in 33 minutes.
REGION MATCH-UP All four non-conference games for the 'Jacks are against NCAA Division II West Region opponents which are very important for rankings. HSU started 0-2 with losses against Western Washington and Seattle from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC). The 'Jacks will finish off their non-conference schedule with two games against Dominican who are members of the PacWest Conference. The CCAA, GNAC and PacWest Conferences are all members of the NCAA Division II West Region.
22-GAME CCAA SCHEDULE: The 'Jacks will open up their 22-game CCAA schedule on December 2-4, when they host SF State and Cal State Monterey Bay. HSU will host the Gators on Dec. 2 and the Otters on Dec. 4. Tip-off for both games are set for 5:30pm at Lumberjack Arena.
CCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN LUMBERJACK ARENA: Humboldt State will host the 2021-22 CCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Championships, March 3-5 at Lumberjack Arena. The top six teams will receive a berth to the CCAA Championships. March 3 will be the quarterfinal round with the top two seeds receiving a bye. The semi-final round games are set for March 4 with the championship game set for March 5. The winner of the CCAA Championships will receive the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Championships.
DOMINICAN: Dominican is 3-2 entering its game on Tuesday at home against Cal State East Bay. The Penguins went 1-1 in the SF State Gator Invite after their game with the 'Jacks. DUC defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 63-58 on Friday and lost 76-74 to SF State on Saturday. Dominican is averaging 70.3 points per game while giving up 64.8 points per game. Its opponents are out-rebounding the Penguins 39.3 to 30.8. Riley Friauf leads the Penguins with her 21.3 scoring and 11.0 rebounding average along with her 10 steals and 55.8% shooting from the field. Alalyah San Juan is averaging 9.0 points per game while shooting 80% from the line and dishing out a team leading 14 assists. Brittney Cedeno is averaging 14.0 points per game also for Dominican.
ALL-TIME SERIES (HSU vs. DUC): Humboldt State leads the all-time series 6-3 after the Lumberjacks' loss to the Penguins on November 17. Before that, HSU won the last meeting 63-47 in Arcata on November 30, 2019. Dominican won the previous two meetings before that 81-70 in Hayward on Nov. 27, 2016, and 76-73 in San Rafael on Nov 29, 20214.
