FRESNO, Calif.--- In a game that saw many runs by each team, Fresno Pacific (10-4) used a 19-1 run in the second half to key its 91-65 victory over Humboldt State University this afternoon at The Special Events Center in Fresno, Calif.
Bryce Mitchell had a team high 18 points while
Victor Mijas chipped in 16 points to lead the way for the Lumberjacks.
Playing in just their third game, HSU (1-2) took a 30-23 lead on an
AJ Sims' three-pointer with 6:33 left in the first half. Fresno Pacific finished the first stanza outscoring its guests 20-7 to take a 43-37 lead into the locker room.
Humboldt State came out firing early in the new stanza as the Lumberjacks went on a 6-0 run capped by a
Bryce Mitchell dunk to cut its deficit to 43-40. FPU increased its lead to double digits, 56-46, with 15 minutes left in the game. The Lumberjacks came back and cut FPU's lead to 56-53 on a Sims' free throw at the 13-minute mark of the second half. Back to back lay-ups from
Victor Mijas and Sims made the FPU lead just one, 61-60, with 10:45 to go in the game, but that's when the Sunbirds went on a 19-1 run to key their victory over the Lumberjacks.
HSU did force 22 turnovers by FPU with 12 coming on steals including three by Gabys Sadaunykas and two each by
Amari Green,
Caleb Giordano and Sims. The guests recorded nine blocks led by
Noah Viera's three.
