ASHLAND, Ore.--- The duo of
AJ Sims and
Gabrys Sadaunykas combined to score 36 points, grab 18 rebounds, dish out six assists and record four steals to carry the Humboldt State Lumberjacks to a 73-65 road victory over the Southern Oregon University Raiders (3-4) this evening at Lithia Motors Pavilion in Ashland, Ore.
Sims shot eight-for-14 from the field including four-for-nine from three-point land and one-for-three from the line for his game high 21 points in 26minutes. He also had three assists, grabbed eight rebounds and recorded two steals. Sadaunykas shot five-for-nine from the field while going two-for-two from three-point land and three-for-four from the line. The senior dished out three assists and recorded two steals while grabbing 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
Humboldt State jumped out to a 12-5 lead to begin in the game. The 'Jacks increased the lead to nine on a
Caleb Giordano lay-up mid-way through the first stanza, 22-13. The Raiders went on a 9-3 run to cut the 'Jack lead to 25-22 with 5 minutes left in the half. A Sims-lay-up capped an 8-2 run by HSU as the guests took a 33-24 lead late in the half. Southern Oregon finished the half with a 11-2 run to tie the game at 35-35 heading into the locker room.
The Raiders took their first lead on their second possession of the new half, 37-35, on a lay-up by Mason Whittaker. The game went back and forth until a three by
Amari Green off an assist from
Keshawn Hall gave HSU a 53-48 lead at the 9:25 mark of the second stanza.
Humboldt State increased its lead to 66-53 on a three by Sims off another assist from Hall with 5:18 left in regulation. The Raiders cut the HSU lead to just 66-60 with 67 ticks on the clock, but the guests scored seven of the final 12 points of the game to take the game 73-65.
The Lumberjacks held a 41-27 advantage on the glass besides Sadaunykas and Sims combining for 18 rebounds,
Bryce Mitchell added seven boards. They forced 16 turnovers by the Raiders including eight by steals. Four players each had two steals in
Bryce Mitchell, Hall, Sims and Sadaunykas.
