SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- The Cal Poly Humboldt Men's Soccer team opened their season against Academy of Art on Thursday from Paul Goode Field in San Francisco. The Lumberjacks secured a 3-0 victory and avenged their 2022 loss to Academy of Art in commanding fashion. Humboldt saw goals from
Cole Falco,
Ethan Conaty, and an own goal from Art U.
Adrian Gallardo posted his first clean sheet of the season in goal.
"It is always great to start the season with a win and we checked a lot of positive boxes today," said head coach
Fred Jungemann. "We had some very good individual performances, and did a great job of keeping our composure against a strong and physical team. Overall, it was exactly the performance we were hoping to start the season with."
The 'Jacks got on the scoreboard in the 31
st minute after an Academy of Art foul in the box resulted in
Cole Falco lining up for a penalty kick. The Urban Knight's goalkeeper guessed opposite of what Falco was thinking and the ball found the back of the net to give Humboldt a 1-0 lead. A minute later,
Landon Leal Ruiz placed the ball in the box off a corner kick that found
Ethan Conaty for a quick second goal in the 32
nd minute. At the half, Humboldt out shot Art U six to four and had four shots on goal in comparison to the Urban Knight's one.
Humboldt remained in control of the pace and obtained consistent possession throughout the second half. The 'Jacks matched their first half total in shots and posted another six in the second half, with two being on goal. The defensive back line held Art U to just one shot in the second half and continued to make things difficult for the opposition. With less than a minute to go in the match, Humboldt pressured the ball and forced the Urban Knights to kick the ball back to their goalie. A defensive breakdown by Art U resulted in an own goal that put the 'Jacks up 3-0 just before time expired.
