ARCATA, Calif. — The Cal Poly Humboldt women's basketball team continued its torrid start to conference play on Thursday night, rolling past Cal State Dominguez Hills, 91-55, inside Lumberjack Arena to remain unbeaten in CCAA action.
The victory pushed the Lumberjacks to 5-0 in the CCAA, tying them for first place in the conference and marking their best start to league play since the 2014 season. Humboldt also improved to 7-4 overall with the convincing home win in front of 300-plus fans.
After opening the game with a dominant first quarter, Humboldt used a massive third-quarter surge to put the game out of reach. The Jacks outscored the Toros 34-11 in the third, shooting over 76 percent from the field during the period while their defense suffocated Dominguez Hills into just two made field goals.
Defense proved to be the difference all night, as Humboldt forced 24 turnovers and converted them into 25 points off turnovers. The Lumberjacks' pressure disrupted passing lanes, ignited fast breaks, and set the tone on both ends of the floor.
Five Lumberjacks finished in double figures, showcasing Humboldt's offensive balance. Kyori Lloyd led the way with 18 points, while Sienna Cherwinski added 16 on an efficient 6-of-8 shooting, including three triples. Shade Satica stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and four steals, while Riley Sanz chipped in 10 points and eight boards. Jada Barnes rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points off the bench.
The defensive presence of Jordyn Smith, Satica, and Kya Kanoho anchored Humboldt's effort. Smith recorded a career-high seven blocks and 10 rebounds, controlling the paint, while Satica and Kanoho combined for eight steals, helping fuel the Jacks' transition offense and sustained pressure throughout the game.
Humboldt finished the night shooting 46.4 percent from the field and knocked down eight three-pointers, while holding Dominguez Hills to just 32.8 percent shooting overall.
The Lumberjacks will look to keep their perfect conference record intact as CCAA play continues this weekend, carrying momentum from one of their most complete performances of the season. Sunday's tip-off verus Cal State Los Angeles (6-4, 3-2 CCAA) will be at 1:00 PM. It is Youth Day for all local kids and campers, with postgame autographs and photo opportunities for those in attendance.
