LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball hits the road this week carrying significant momentum, as the Lumberjacks travel south for a pair of CCAA matchups against Cal State Los Angeles on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m., followed by the CCAA Game of the Week on Saturday afternoon at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Jan. 31 at 3:00 p.m.
Humboldt enters the week riding a four-game winning streak and having won eight of its last nine games, improving to 11-7 overall and 9-3 in conference play. The Lumberjacks sit firmly in the upper tier of the conference standings as they begin a pivotal road stretch against two Southern California opponents.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lumberjacks delivered back-to-back thrillers last weekend at Lumberjack Arena to cap a perfect homestand and continue their recent surge.
On Thursday, Humboldt authored one of the most memorable comebacks of the season, erasing a 22-point deficit to defeat Cal Poly Pomona 85-81 in overtime during the Cal Poly Clash. The Lumberjacks trailed by as many as 22 in the first half before mounting a relentless second-half rally fueled by defensive pressure and timely shooting. Rob Jenkins led all scorers with 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Drew Ardouin provided a spark off the bench with 19 points, including five three-pointers. Zaveion Bineyard recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Dennis Cash sealed the comeback with the putback game-winner in overtime as Humboldt improved to 3-0 in extra-time games this season.
Humboldt followed up with another dramatic finish Saturday afternoon, beating Cal State San Bernardino 80-78 on Wayne Hampton III's buzzer-beating jumper. The tightly contested matchup featured nine ties and eight lead changes, with neither team able to pull away. Hampton finished with 17 points, four assists, and two steals, while Bineyard added 13 points and six rebounds. The Lumberjacks shot over 52 percent from the field and received 29 bench points as Hampton's final shot sent the home crowd into a frenzy and secured Humboldt's fourth straight win.
LIGHT IT UP AT LOS ANGELES
Cal State Los Angeles (6-12, 5-7 CCAA) welcomes the Lumberjacks on Thursday night as Humboldt opens its road swing. The Golden Eagles have battled through conference play and will look to defend home court against one of the CCAA's hottest teams.
In their last matchup at the beginning of January, Humboldt was able to squeak out a three-point win at home, 75-72. The Golden Eagles have also lost three of their last four heading into this game.
For Humboldt, the matchup presents an opportunity to carry its offensive balance and late-game composure onto the road. The Lumberjacks have thrived in close contests during their recent run and will look to set the tone early against a Cal State Los Angeles squad aiming to climb the conference standings.
CCAA GAME OF THE WEEK
Saturday's matchup against Cal State Dominguez Hills (13-5, 9-3 CCAA) closes the weekend with significant conference implications. The Toros enter the game tied with Humboldt for second place in the CCAA standings, setting the stage for a high-stakes battle as the regular season inches closer to the postseason.
The last time these two teams met came at the start of January where the Lumberjacks hosted and won a thrilling overtime game, 97-91. Since then, the Toros have won six of their last seven and now seek revenge against a well-polished Lumberjacks team.
Humboldt will look to lean on its depth, interior presence, and poise in late-game situations as it faces a Dominguez Hills team that has proven difficult to beat at home. With both teams jockeying for postseason positioning, Saturday's contest figures to be another physical and competitive conference showdown.
