Lumberjacks’ Second-Half Equalizer Not Enough Against UC Merced

ARCATA, Calif. - Azis Camerrer scored a second-half equalizer for Cal Poly Humboldt, but UC Merced found the deciding goal in the 83rd minute to secure a 2-1 result Thursday afternoon at College Creek Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Humboldt created the first opportunity of the match in the third minute when Izaiah Grosveld sent an attempt wide. Grosveld placed another shot on target in the 12th minute before Gabriel Tucci and Shota Lam added chances during the opening half.

UC Merced opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Daniel Gaona found the back of the net, sending the Lumberjacks into halftime facing a 1-0 deficit.

Humboldt responded after the break. Camerrer produced two early attempts before scoring the equalizer in the 56th minute, bringing the match level at 1-1 with his second goal of the season.

The teams remained even until the closing stages. Jaycob Walker scored off an assist from Christian Khanishian in the 83rd minute to put UC Merced back in front.

The Lumberjacks continued searching for another response as Dominic Calero recorded an attempt in the 85th minute and Humboldt earned a corner kick during the final minute.

UC Merced finished with a 14-12 advantage in shots and placed four attempts on goal compared with three for Humboldt. The teams each earned eight corner kicks.

Grosveld led the Lumberjacks with five shots and placed two on target, while Camerrer recorded three attempts and Humboldt's goal. Alvaro Nieves played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded one save, while the Lumberjack defense added a team save.

The result moved Humboldt to 2-9-3 overall and 1-7 in CCAA play.

UP NEXT

The Lumberjacks will travel to Fresno Pacific for a CCAA matchup Saturday, Oct. 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Ramirez Field.
