SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball heads back on the road this week for a pivotal pair of CCAA contests, beginning Thursday, Feb. 19 at Cal State San Bernardino at 7:30 p.m. for the CCAA Game of the Week, followed by a Saturday afternoon matchup at Cal Poly Pomona on Feb. 21 at 3 p.m.
The Lumberjacks enter the trip at 13-11 overall and 11-7 in conference play after snapping a four-game losing streak with a home victory over San Francisco State. With the regular season winding down, Humboldt looks to build momentum and solidify its position in the CCAA standings and CCAA Tournament.
When the 'Jacks score 70 points or more, they post a record of 12-3. On the flip side, when Humboldt scores less than 70 points, they hold a record of 1-8.
Cal Poly Humboldt can clinch a spot in the postseason with two wins this week, or clinch with a win on Thursday and losses by Cal Poly Pomona and Stanislaus State.
LAST TIME OUT
Cal Poly Humboldt split its home stand last week, delivering a strong overtime performance against a nationally ranked opponent before returning to the win column on Saturday.
On Thursday, the Lumberjacks pushed No. 2-ranked Cal State East Bay to overtime before falling 88-84 in a back-and-forth thriller at Lumberjack Arena. Humboldt erased a double-digit halftime deficit and battled through nine ties and 10 lead changes but was ultimately undone by turnovers. Shakir Odunewu led the way with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Rob Jenkins added 16 points and six assists. Zaveion Bineyard contributed 15 points on a perfect shooting night along with four blocks. It was the first time undefeated Cal State State East Bay was taken to overtime this season.
Humboldt responded Saturday with a 72-60 win over San Francisco State. Odunewu delivered a career night, posting Humboldt career highs with 25 points and 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Bineyard added 20 points and nine rebounds, and Jenkins recorded 11 points and seven assists. The Lumberjacks controlled the glass with a 39-27 rebounding advantage and shot 45.1 percent from the field.
CALM, COOL & COLLECTED AT THE COYOTES
Cal State San Bernardino enters Thursday's contest at 12-13 overall and 9-9 in conference play. The Coyotes have struggled on their home floor, but have turned it on in their last two matchups with a commanding win against UC Merced and a buzzer-beating three to steal a game from Stanislaus State. They will be looking to strengthen their postseason positioning with another with a potential third straight win at home.
The matchup presents another critical test for Humboldt, which aims to carry over its defensive intensity and rebounding strength from Saturday's win. The Lumberjacks will look for continued production from Odunewu and Bineyard while emphasizing ball security against a San Bernardino defense.
Last time these two faced, Wayne Hampton III delivered a clutch shot at the buzzer to defeat the Coyotes at home with a final score of 80-78.
BRINGING IT TO THE BRONCOS
Cal Poly Pomona comes into the weekend at 13-11 overall and 8-10 in CCAA play. The Broncos have shown the ability to challenge conference opponents and will look to do so after a month of ups and downs. Having split their last ten games, Cal Poly Pomona will look to get to .500 in conference play
Saturday's matinee closes Humboldt's Southern California trip and could carry significant implications in the conference race. The Lumberjacks will seek consistency on both ends of the floor as they continue their push toward the postseason.
Earlier this season, the 'Jacks took down the Broncos with a final score of 85-81 in overtime.
