ARCATA, Calif. – Cal Poly Humboldt men's basketball closes out the regular season this week at Lumberjack Arena, hosting Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. for the program's Black-Out Game, followed by the regular-season finale against Cal State San Marcos on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 3 p.m. for Senior Day and Fan Appreciation Day.
With postseason implications front and center, Humboldt enters the weekend at 13-13 overall and 11-9 in CCAA play. The Lumberjacks have dropped six of their last seven contests and are looking to regain momentum with two pivotal home games as they battle for a spot in the six-team CCAA Tournament.
LAST TIME OUT
Humboldt is coming off a challenging road trip that featured two tightly contested battles against top opponents.
On Thursday, the Lumberjacks suffered an 80-77 heartbreak at Cal State San Bernardino. In a back-and-forth contest marked by eight ties and eight lead changes, Humboldt took a 77-75 lead with 15 seconds remaining on a clutch basket by Raydon Thorson. CSUSB answered to tie the game before a late defensive play led to a buzzer-beating three-pointer by the Coyotes.
Zaveion Bineyard led Humboldt with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Brandon Bento-Jackson tied his career high with 20 points behind six made three-pointers. Shakir Odunewu added 13 points and five rebounds, and Rob Jenkins chipped in 11 points off the bench.
The Lumberjacks followed with a 74-60 loss at Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday. Humboldt rallied from a 16-point second-half deficit and cut the margin to three midway through the half, but Pomona responded with a late run to pull away.
Drew Ardouin paced the Jacks with 11 points on three triples. Odunewu added 11 points in limited minutes, Bento-Jackson scored 10, and Wayne Hampton III contributed 10 points and seven rebounds. Humboldt battled Pomona evenly on the glass but was limited to 33.3% shooting.
CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY
Thursday's Black-Out Game brings a high-stakes matchup against Cal State Monterey Bay (16-10, 11-9 CCAA), a team locked in the same postseason race as Humboldt, but boasting a better overall record than the 'Jacks.
The Otters enter the weekend battling for conference positioning, making Thursday's contest critical for both programs. For Humboldt, the game presents an opportunity to protect home court, tighten its tournament resume, and build momentum entering the final stretch. The Otters score the most out of any team in the CCAA by more than four points a game and are top in the CCAA in three pointers per game (10.3) and rebounds per game (40.8). The team does struggle on the defensive side of the ball, allowing the second most points by opponents so look for this matchup to be high-scoring.
Last time these teams faced in Seaside, Humboldt was victorious 83-72.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON: CAL STATE SAN MARCOS
Saturday's regular-season finale carries equal significance as the Lumberjacks honor their seniors and celebrate Fan Appreciation Day in their last regular season game.
Cal State San Marcos (13-12, 10-10 CCAA) arrives fighting for its own postseason berth, setting the stage for a potentially decisive clash. Humboldt will look to give its seniors a win while strengthening its standing ahead of the CCAA Tournament. San Marcos sits just outside CCAA Tournament contention, but has the chance to spoil Humboldt's chances.
Last time these teams faced off in San Marcos, the 'Jacks fell 64-56 without Zaveion Bineyard and Rob Jenkins.
