What is Jacks Forever?
Jacks Forever is a monthly, perpetual gift where all money raised goes to student-athlete scholarships. Participants can join for as little as $25 a month. Donors can specify which program will benefit from their membership.
Jacks Forever members receive many benefits, including first priority for the best available season tickets in basketball and football.
An acknowledgement letter from University Advancement will be sent at the close of the calendar year to use for tax purposes. For those using HSU payroll deduction, the deduction will appear on the monthly pay stub.
Humboldt Scholarship History
The first scholarships for student-athletes were offered in the 1998-99 academic year. Since that time, HSU scholarships increased from $53,210 in 1998-99 to almost $500,000 in 2008-09, an increase of almost ten-fold.
Despite the rousing success of scholarship support, Humboldt is still behind the rest of the teams in the conference and the nation.
Humboldt was a member of the non-scholarship Northern California Athletic Conference that disbanded in 1998. The NCAC was the last non-scholarship Division II conference in the country. HSU then joined the PacWest Conference for three years, and then Humboldt joined the newly formed Great Northwest Athletic Conference in 2002. In 2006 the Lumberjacks switched from the GNAC to the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
What is a scholarship equivalent?
A scholarship equivalent is the cost of tuition, fees, room & board, and books (up to $300) at a particular institution. The current scholarship equivalent cost at Humboldt State is almost $15,000 per student-athlete.
The NCAA has a maximum allowable scholarship equivalent which varies sport by sport. For instance, each Division II school is allowed to offer up to 10 scholarship equivalents for women’s basketball. A scholarship equivalent can be given to one student-athlete (a “full ride”) or split among two or several student-athletes.
Using scholarship equivalents rather than actual scholarship dollars allows for an equitable comparison among all Div. II schools.
