NCAA Infractions Case

California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt (Humboldt) has reached a negotiated resolution with the NCAA enforcement staff regarding violations within the softball program. These violations primarily involve impermissible tryouts and inducements provided to a prospective student-athlete, as well as unethical conduct and a failure to cooperate on the part of the former head coach and volunteer coach.

Specifically, the violations include:

  • Impermissible Tryouts and Inducements: From August 26 through September 16, 2023, the former head coach conducted impermissible tryouts with a prospective student-athlete and provided approximately $445 in impermissible recruiting inducements, including university-branded apparel, softball equipment, entertainment, and a meal. The former head coach was aware that the prospect was ineligible and not enrolled but still allowed her to participate with the softball program.
     

  • Unethical Conduct: The former head coach violated NCAA principles of ethical conduct by instructing softball staff members and student-athletes to conceal an injury suffered by the prospective student-athlete at a team practice and to conceal her involvement with the program. The former head coach also provided false and misleading information to the enforcement staff during the investigation.
     

  • Failure to Promote Compliance: The former head coach failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance within the softball program due to her direct involvement in the aforementioned violations.
     

  • Failure to Cooperate: The former volunteer coach failed to cooperate with the NCAA enforcement staff by not responding to requests for an interview and participation in the investigation.
     

Probationary Period:

The university is currently serving a probationary period related to this case. The length of the probationary period is yet to be determined.
