Cal Poly Humboldt's Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Dr. Nick Pettit, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Mike Herbert as the Assistant Athletics Director for Community Partnerships and Revenue Generation. Dr. Herbert brings a wealth of experience and a deep connection to the campus, making his return to Humboldt a homecoming in every sense.
"We are excited to welcome Mike to our administrative team, he brings a breadth of experience and talents to the department which will greatly enhance Cal Poly Humboldt Athletics into the future," stated Dr. Pettit. "Mike is a natural leader and our community will enjoy his professionalism and personality, we are fortunate to have him back home."
Dr. Herbert's journey with Cal Poly Humboldt began over three decades ago when he attended the men's basketball summer camp as a seventh grader in 1988. His love for the campus grew during subsequent summers as a camp coach. In 2000, he returned to Humboldt as a graduate assistant with the men's basketball program under coaches Tom Wood and Steve Kinder, eventually earning his Masters Degree in Kinesiology here.
After completing his education, Dr. Herbert pursued a career path marked by significant achievements, including a Ph.D. in Physical Education and Recreation from the University of New Mexico and a distinguished tenure at Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC). During his 17 years at SWOCC, he held various pivotal roles, from assistant men's basketball coach to Athletic Director and most recently as the Dean of Health & Physical Education, Athletics, Enrollment Management, and Recreation Center.
"This is a return home for me in many ways," said Dr. Herbert. "I have incredible memories here working with Coach Wood and Coach Kinder. I am so grateful to Dr. Pettit for giving me this opportunity to be back at Humboldt, and I look forward to helping the athletic department connect with community partners in any way I can."
Dr. Herbert's extensive background in athletics administration includes seven successful years as the Head Women's Basketball Coach at SWOCC, culminating in multiple appearances at the NWAC championship tournament. His leadership was instrumental in fostering a culture of excellence both on and off the court.
Dr. Mike Herbert, in his new role at Cal Poly Humboldt, will work directly with Playfly Aspire, leveraging their expertise in enhancing external partnerships and driving ticket revenue generation. Playfly Aspire pioneered an outsourced licensed ticketing model, which has proven highly successful for its partners, supported by custom research and effective onsite training.
