Kevin Sutherland joins the Humboldt State football coaching staff as an offensive assistant after spending last season at Southern Methodist University as the quarterbacks coach.
During his time at SMU Sutherland helped lead his team to a 7-5 regular season record, along with their first bowl appearance and first winning season in five years. Starting quarterback Ben Hicks finished the year with 3,442 yards and 32 touchdowns as SMU’s offense finished eighth in the country with 40.2 points per game.
Before arriving at SMU, Sutherland spent a season at Montana Tech University as the cornerbacks coach. His responsibilities included coaching cornerbacks as well as the punt and kick return units. Sutherland ran the scout team offense and led the team in all film breakdown and scouting reports. He also assisted with the strength and conditioning program and implemented speed training in the offseason. Sutherland spent the 2014 season as the defensive backs coach at Shasta College where his team finished third in the nation with 26 interceptions.
Sutherland graduated with a bachelor’s degree in educational studies from Western Governors University.
