Kelly Wood

Kelly Wood enters her eighth season as head coach of the Humboldt State volleyball program. She is the program’s fourth all-time winningest head coach with 54 victories.

In 2019, Wood coached Lenox Loving to All-CCAA Honors. During the 2016 season, Wood led the 'Jacks to a 13-13 record.  Humboldt State volleyball players Nicole Bewley and Symone Hayden earned All-California Collegiate Athletic Association Second Team honors.

Injuries derailed a promising 2015 campaign, keeping the Jacks out of the inaugural CCAA postseason tournament. Wood did have two individuals stand out with Symone Hayden and Kaitlyn Dunaway each being named as second team all-conference performers.

In a breakthrough second year, Wood took the Jacks to the top-tier of the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Her 17 wins were the most at Humboldt State since 1997 and the fourth-place conference finish was the program's highest as a CCAA member. Four players on Wood's 2014 team received all-conference recognition. Nicole Bewley and Haley Biles were first team selections, and Kaitlyn Dunaway and Ashley Owen were named to the second team. Individually, Wood coached the CCAA's Newcomer of the Year in Bewley and Libero of the Year in Biles.

In her first season, Wood inherited a Lumberjack team that was 3-26 overall and 1-21 in conference. Wood wasted no time in quadrupling the Green and Gold's win total, returning the Lumberjacks to double-figure wins (12) for the first time since 2007.

Prior to joining the Lumberjack program, Wood served as head coach at SRJC for 10 years, guiding the Bear Cubs to seven appearances in the California Community College State Championships. Her teams appeared in six consecutive CCCSA tournaments and won four Big Eight Conference titles in five years, earning her recognition as Conference Coach of the Year Honors three times and Regional Coach of the Year honors twice

Following graduation from South Fork High School, Wood attended Santa Rosa Junior College, starring as a volleyball and basketball player from 1992-94. She transferred to Sonoma State for her final two collegiate volleyball seasons, earning all-conference and all-region honors while leading the Seawolves to the Northern California Athletic Conference Championship.

Wood graduated from Sonoma State in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in psychology, then served two stints an assistant coach at SRJC and one year as interim head coach. She was hired as head coach in 2002 following the retirement of Diane Campagna. Wood earned a master's degree in education from Chapman University in 2004.

The niece of former HSU men's basketball head coach Tom Wood, Kelly continues a family coaching legacy established by her uncle, who guided Humboldt State to 11 appearances in the NCAA Division II Championships and holds the Lumberjack HSU basketball record for most wins.

Wood is married to Greg Railsback, and they have two children, Mason and Olivia.
