ARCATA – Despite playing the final 59 minutes with only 10 men, the Humboldt State men's soccer team used three-second half goals to defeat Academy of Art University 3-0 Wednesday.
 
With the win, the No. 6 regionally ranked Jacks move to 6-2-3 overall while the Urban Knights fall to 3-5-2.
 
“There was a little pressure on us to score in the second 45 considering it was still level at the half,” said HSU head men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “(Academy of Art) did a great job of packing it in and getting men behind the ball.”
 
The Jacks had numerous opportunities to score in the first half, outshoot the Urban Knights 12-1, but could not capitalize.
 
The game changed when HSU's Dylan Sutherland was sent off after a harsh tackle 31 minutes into the game.
 
Despite playing a man down, the Jacks continued to pressure AAU. They finally broke through when Josh Suggs recorded his team high fifth goal of the year. Matt Colwell recorded the assist.
 
“Playing a man down forced us to pressure them a little bit more than we were earlier in the game,” said Cumbo. “It actually allowed to find more space because we had one less guy on the field.”
 
HSU doubled its lead eight minutes later E.J. Schneekluth took a Kete Meskill pass after a turnover by the Urban Knights keeper.
 
Russell Vernon capped off the night with a header off of a Colwell corner kick.
 
HSU returns to California Collegiate Athletic Association play Friday facing No. 14 nationally ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
