ARCATA – Matt Colwell's bicycle kick with five minutes remaining capped off a successful night as the No. 7 regionally ranked Humboldt State men's soccer team defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action Friday.

With the win, the Jacks improved to 7-3-4 overall and 2-3-3 in CCAA play. The Broncos fell to 4-7-1 and 2-6-1 in the CCAA.

“It was very important to get a win tonight,” said Humboldt State head men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “This was a game we felt we could and should win and we did exactly that.”

The Jacks got off to a hot start, immediately putting pressure on Pomona keeper Ben Sussman. HSU broke through 14 minutes in when Roland Demombynes took a E.J. Schneekluth through ball and beat an on-rushing Sussman and hit the back of the empty net.

“We played extremely in the first half,” said Cumbo. “We had a specific objective of how we wanted to play defensively and we did that.”

The second half was a different story, with the Broncos putting most of the pressure on HSU. Pomona leveled the score when Rigo Cardenas converted a penalty kick 20 minutes into the second half.

“We couldn't really establish play the first 15-20 minutes of the second half,” said Cumbo.

The goal seemed to kick-start the Jacks' attack, with HSU answering the pressure that the Broncos had applied.

The Jacks took the lead for good in the 85th minute when Demombynes flicked a ball to Colwell, who was waiting at the top of the six-yard box and put it into the back post.

“Once we gave up the goal, we started playing like we wanted to again,” said Cumbo. “We did well to change the momentum they had established.”

 The Jacks will look to sweep to record another three points in the standings when they face Cal State San Bernardino Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Redwood Bowl.
