Rebels keep Jacks winless in GNAC

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Humboldt State's offense remained dormant throughout and the Jacks' defense finally cracked in the second half, allowing Dixie State College to claim a 16-6 victory in Great Northwest Athletic Conference football Saturday.

Earning its first league win, Dixie State improved to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in the GNAC while Humboldt State dropped to 2-5 and remained winless in conference at 0-4.

Adam Wells paced a potent Dixie running game, piling up 186 yards on 21 carries and scoring a touchdown. Quarterback Dexter Hill rushed for the other touchdown, also scored in the third quarter. Hill also finished 21 of 36 passing for 199 yards and an interception.

HSU was unable to rediscover the rushing attack it enjoyed in last week's win over Azusa Pacific, managing only 73 yards on 36 carries Saturday. Quarterbacks Mike Proulx and Brian Hildebrand shared the passing duties, Proulx completing 8-of-14 for 60 yards and Hildenbrand connecting on 7-of-15 for 119 yards and the Jacks' lone touchdown.

Humboldt State missed a solid opportunity to take control early, driving all the way to the DSC 7-yard line on its first possession. But a holding penalty and quarterback sack took away the Jacks' scoring opportunity, and they eventually turned the ball over on downs.

Dixie State also missed a chance in the second quarter when an offensive pass interference penalty stalled a drive that had advanced all the way to the Jacks' 8-yard line. Zack Manning's 40-yard field goal attempt missed wide left, keeping the scoreboard blank heading into the break.

On its first possession of the second half, Dixie State drove the ball 79 yards on nine plays, capping the march with HIll's eight-yard scramble for the touchdown. They finished the quarter in similar fashion, this time moving the ball 98 yards in only seven plays, including Wells' 61-yard scamper for the touchdown.

Wells' helped the Jacks gain their own score when his fumble was recovered by the Jacks' Justin Rose on the Dixie 22-yard line early in the fourth quarter. Three plays later Hildebrand connected with Kevin Miles on a 15-yard touchdown pass, but a blocked extra point not only kept the Jacks at six points, but added two to Dixie's ledger when Aric Hutchinson returned the block all the way for a defensive PAT.

Leading HSU's defensive efforts were free safety Jeff Williams, who had a team-high 12 tackles, and strong safety Guy Ricciardulli, who added his sixth interception of the year. The game also marked the return of linebacker Allen Brunner, who has been out with a knee injury since the season-opener. Brunner had eight tackles, including one for a loss.

Humboldt State returns home for GNAC action this week, hosting Central Washington at 6 p.m. Saturday in Redwood Bowl.
