ARCATA – Jeff Meyer's goal 32 minutes into the game was the difference as Cal State San Bernardino defeated Humboldt State 1-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer action Sunday.
With the loss, the Jacks fall to 7-4-4 overall and 2-4-3 in the CCAA while the Coyotes move to 6-7-1 and 5-4-1 in CAA play.
“Everybody is disappointed in our effort today,” said HSU head men's soccer coach Andy Cumbo. “Today we lacked the commitment it takes to win at this level.”
CSUSB got the only goal of the game when Meyer volleyed in a loose ball past HSU goalkeeper
Drew Ryan off of a throw in.
“We really lacked any type of flow in the game, but especially in the first half,” said Cumbo.
The Jacks did have their opportunities in the second half, with
Josh Suggs and
Roland Demombynes having the best chances. However, nothing came about as the Coyotes stood firm and held their lead.
For the game, CSUSB outshot Humboldt State 14-13. Coyotes goalkeeper Arath De La Rocha finished the game with just two saves while Ryan finished with six saves.
“We had the chances today we needed to win, but we just didn't put them away,” said Cumbo. “(CS San Bernardino) did a great job of holding its lead.”
Humboldt State will close out its homestand next Sunday when Sonoma State comes to Arcata. Kickoff is scheduled 3 p.m.
